I just caught this on CrunchGear: Digg’s Kevin Rose told me a few weeks ago that he had some good inside information on the upcoming iPhone, but he wouldn’t tell me anything. Well, after a couple of beers he spills the beans on Diggnation, and the clip is embedded below.
According to Kevin there are two models, 4 GB and 8 GB, priced at $249 and $449. No word on whether they’ll be shipping an unlocked version of the phone as Om Malik recently reported, but Kevin says Apple is adding both GSM and CDMA radios into the iPhone, making it truly carrier-independent. The device will have a slide out keyboard, a touch screen and two batteries (one for the MP3 player, one for the phone).

I’m glad to see Apple may release a phone because no one is going to carry both an iPod and cell phone when they don’t have to.
I’m curiouis about integration with the data channel. IF it’s just a USB synching shuffle and a phone in one case, then who cares.
If it integrates synching over the data channel, not just music, but iCal and contacts, then it starts to be more interesting.
When will these phones be out in stores?

It must ship unlocked. If it’s tied to one carrier, it will not reach critical mass, nor would it fall in line with Apple’s ease-of-use philosophy.

It needs to have wireless connectivity so that I can use skype in Wifi enabled areas… I want free calls and want to download my music directly from the phone through free Wifi (I work in Mtn View). If it has these features, where can I place my order?

Sounds improbable, as this sounds like a big and clunky device and that would be against all user centered rules and Apples state-of-the-art mentality. If it will be shipped like this (2 radio stacks + 2 batteries + slide out keyboard + touch screen) it will be a techfest and therefore only be bought by the early adopters and techfreaks. This would be a sad move from a company historically good at marketing. If Apple will make an iPhone they should make it simplistic and address the mid-segment.
I would suggest:
- no touch screen (expensive, two handed interaction)
- one battery (size)
- no slideout keyboard (size) - and why should it have one at all?
- one GSM-phone and one CDMA-phone, or just have WCDMA.

LOL slide-out keyboard… uh huh. So much for that shit. So he mentioned touch screen, but he still talked about this slide-out keyboard?? Was he just making shit up, grasping at straws, saying as much shit so at least most of it would be right? Obviously what this kid saw wasn’t Apple’s phone. Poor kid, hope he gets home alright.
Kevin only mentioned vague details he heard from someone else…and some details actually turned out to be correct. When you stop and think about Jobs’ keynote, the keyboard (albeit on screen and operated via touch input) does in fact “slide out”.

Come now.. that is stretching it a bit. So that means I have a “slide in/slide out” dock in my Mac??? I can set it to auto hide, and it can slide in both directions… A slide out keyboard he was talking about is a manual slide out keyboard, as in “pull my finger” slide out, as in something is gonna stick out of the unit to type on it.
What really did he get right? He got the prices wrong. He got the carriers wrong (all three?), he got the slide out keyboard wrong, the only thing I see he got right was the storage size.. which didn’t take a psychic to figure out, since Apple is using those sizes in their nanos. I see no metion at Apple about 2 batteries, is this him being wrong again?
You know what happened. Everyone and their grandmother knew a phone was coming out sometime for a long time. So he sat down, and started talking like he actually had knew what was going on. To look good maybe? IDK. He ends up looking like a moron. If I had a guy “inside” and I ended up looking foolish like Kevin did, I wouldn’t be talking to that guy anymore. Kevin offered nothing I couldn’t have guessed.
