New Photo Sharing Site: Se Habla Español…Et Français

pikeologo.jpgMaybe the world actually does need another photo sharing service. In a recent Spanish blog, one user wrote, (translated from Spanish) “If there is anything in the entire world that I refute, it is that Flickr is in English.”

A new photo sharing site called Pikeo launched in beta about three weeks ago in English, Spanish, and French. But language is not the site’s only claim to fame. The company is emphasizing mapping as the most salient feature.

pikeoscreen.jpg“Maps are the center of the experience,” said Celine Lacombe, project manager for Pikeo, in a phone conversation today. “We think that pictures tell stories when they are inside of maps so that you know where they’ve been taken.”

The cool thing about tagging photos on Pikeo is that users can search photos based on three separate criteria: Who, What, and Where. So if you search for “Paris,” you can find photos categorized by who took them, what they were photographing, and where they are geographically.

Pikeo also has a fast uploading function that doesn’t require users to download a pesky desktop application. You can upload an entire folder directly from the site and it works in the background so that users can continue to browse photos while uploading their own.

Pikeo was built on Adobe’s new Flex 2 technology. It’s about as easy to navigate as they come.

Pikeo development was spearheaded by the San Francisco-based R&D unit of France Telecom. The company will host an official launch party next Tuesday in downtown San Francisco. To land yourself an invitation, click here.

This is from there about page…

“Pikeo is a beta product from France Telecom Research and Development LLC in South San Francisco and is not a “certified” France Telecom product. What does this mean in normal language?”

I have no problem with that. But as the very first line ? How about…

“We do xyz, and you’ll love because of abc…” and then add the not certified stuff. Do they really think this is what people are trying to learn when they click on about. Likely this is just old school telecom industry butt covering.

my take: five.

that’s the number of days it should take flickr to copy all the features pikeo introduced.

it’s also the number of seconds I’ll spend at a site that requires flash to operate.

hope another photo sharing site launches soon, I’m itchin’ to reupload all my photos to another site no one’s heard of yet, but will certainly take time out of the day to try.

Web for All and All for Web.

The WWW is large enough to have another photo sharing service.
According to recent research, Latinos are one of the largest spending consumer group today.It will be interesting to see how Google and the other titans will capitalize on that fact.

Adios mi amigos y amigas.

The name doesn’t translate very well in colloqial English English…..

Pikeo isn’t the first photo sharing site in several languages. Zooomr for example has 17 languages !
Anyway, it’s a good news.
And it seem to be a France Telecom company.

I think Grapheety.com is a much better geo-blogging site than Zoomr, flickr, or any other xxxx-r sites.

http://www.grapheety.com

all of these sites do too many things and they’re all slow. I just want to share a photo and a story and explore the world.

@anonymouse #2
My stats show me that no one has heard of my site yet: yourep.com

@Tim

Photagious (http://www.photagious.com/) lets you do just that (http://www.photagious.com/slideshow?84180440f08cb6700ba9c91160113763)

Needs work. 40 seconds and the home page still has not loaded. giving up.

Hey! Zooomr has been functioning in Espanol, and several other languages for most of this year, 2006.

http://www.zooomr.com

A ”Who, What, Where” system has previously been implemented by Zoto, although Kord has a blog post in which he says that he regrets implementing such as system (http://www.geekceo.com/?archives/30-The-Best-Image-Detail-Page-Wins.html). Personally I do like a more structured system for its added context, but for the average user a flat folksonomic tag system is much more usable. Pikeo have made adding their different classes of tag reasonably simple though, although the need for specific ‘Where’ tags with mapping and geolocation is dubious, and closer integration of ‘Who’ like Zooomer is preferable. So with enhanced functionality refined tag classes are rather redundant.

I’d agree that the name isn’t great in [British] English (being rather similar to ‘Pikey’), the interface is pretty rough, and I’m not keen on flash-based services myself (quite apart that it isn’t reponding properly at present). It feels a bit like the original Flickr flash app. With polish this looks like it could make it into the Orange-brand triple/quad-play offering though. The colour scheme certainly matches…

Flickr will soon be in Spanish, I read the story on elpais.es (a very well known spanish newspaper in which they interviewed the founder)
here’s the link: http://www.elpais.com/articulo.....net_1/Tes/

Cheers!

and good luck to Pikeo! :/

En terms of language, Flickr is not so good in French. Anyway, Pikeo is not only a special name. I think the first shot for a beta version is good because it is compared to the best photo sharing websites. Not radically better but quite as good, combining the best of other sites. As a whole, Pikeo is nice and clear.

The design and user experience is interesting: for example, Pikeo allows to upload as many pictures as you want in a single operation, whereas Flickr forces the user to select files one by one.

The map is quite more rich and precis than flickr’s in many countries.

I just expect that it will be improved with richer functionalities, rss and rotate function, large size slideshow for exemple…

Flickr = 20MB/month free
Zoomr = 100MB/month free

Pikeo= 1GB free, 4 years of FlickR, 10 months of Zoomr !!

thanks Pikeo!

Heh, for Brits, the name is not so good. Pikey/Pike is a word used to describe someone very low down the social ladder.

I definitly love design and if we compare it to the others we’d say there’s a real work on it…

thx

natali, the blog is in spanish language, but is an argentine blog :)

I just gave it a try. Looks pretty slick, but froze and crash when I tried to upload or view any items.

My photos are currently on http://www.pickle.com, which is great since I can keep them with my videos. But whether it’s Pickle, or Photobucket, or Youtube, users (myself included) want to get their content loaded and out to their friends. Whether it’s embedding on myspace, blogger or facebook or just sending an e-mail, sharing with friends is a higher priority than all of the geo/tagging descriptions.

Whoever thinks this site is good, is on something. Or I guess the ones who are saying good things about Pikeo, works there. Nice try!
This site shouldn’t be even live; it’s embarassing.

Hey Michael, I love reading your blog, but did they pay you to write this piece on them?
