[...] One benefit to covering cool companies is the subsequent rise in status to “official insider.” After writing about Gotuit at the TechCrunch NY party, the company contacted me to set up a pre-brief on a new product announcement. The new product, SceneMaker - which launches today - is a consumer application for tagging video segments within larger video clips. Gotuit calls SceneMaker the “first social video tagging application.” I personally think the word social should have been retired from the lexicon immediately after Zune’s ridiculous “Welcome to the Social” campaign hit, but semantics aside, SceneMaker is a welcome addition to the world of online video.
[...] I spent a short and sweaty evening at TechCrunch New York tonight. (Which will be last night by the time this gets posted.) The venue was hot, loud and not at all ideal for showing off Web apps. Ever been to a bar in Manhattan? Add small tables with placards and laptop displays and you can picture the scene. I would have preferred a location where I could see who was showing their wares and hear what they had to say. Instead, I ended up looking over shoulders and squeezing past trays of appetizers just to discover if there was a company I wanted to learn more about. [...]

Not to be a critic, BUT, here goes. I loved the concept of this and really enjoyed some of the product demos. The people were cool, the concept was cool, but the venue just was not. If I was 22 years old on X it would have been perfect. The free coors light and wine was a nice touch, but when I went to order a cocktail it was $12 for a weak poor. And then the bouncer guy who wouldn't let me put my beer on the table (with a table cloth) that the food was on while I tried to text into the partystrands. What is that? I realize this attitude and price is standard for these clubs, but I guess that's my point why have this at a club? My suggestion, rent out a wharehouse in brooklyn with plenty of space for lots of people and product demos with premium beer kegs. I think it would be less expensive and more fun. Anyway, again nice concept and great peops just a little rant about the venue choice ;)
