[...] Social networks are all about user contributed data. Without it, their is no site. But as more and more users contribute this data, are more and more of those users wanting to have the ability to then export that data out of the social network? Marshal Kirkpatrick (in an earlier post on TechCrunch) went as far as to call data portability a rights issue: I own rights on my data; I want to be able to easily and quickly take it with me from one social network to another. — Marshal Kirkpatrick [...]

[...] There’s not just vox… Marshall Kirkpatrick compares the privacy centric multimedia social networking service multiply with vox: “If you are looking to share text, photos and video with some control over who can see your content - these are two services you should check out.” His conclusion after comparing various aspects of the tools: “If you’re looking for beautiful templates to chose between, a young hip crowd to network with and a company most likely to support emerging technology trends requested by early-adopter type users then Vox is the way to go. If you seek logical and robust privacy controls and shelter from an online world of strangers then Multiply is better designed. I prefer Multiply’s handling of media items and news feeds from your network of contacts. Vox is beautiful, Multiply is more functional.” [...]

[...] The current issue of The Economist has a generous profile of Mena Trott of Six Apart. If you are into blogging then Six Apart is a familiar name. Its products, Movable Type and Typepad, are popular blogging platforms for “power bloggers” with large audiences. Five years back, Mena Trott with the help of her reclusive husband, Ben Trott, started keeping an online diary that caught on. To their credit, they were able to see the future potential of this. They created the two blogging platforms and an online journal platform, LiveJournal, to enable others to get into the act. Now they have 30m bloggers around the world. Naturally the big guys like Google, with Blogger, and News Corp, with MySpace, have entered the space. But Six Apart continues to push forward in extending the concept of self-publishing to newer audiences. Their recent focus is on people who are not tech savvy and are wary of sharing their life details with strangers. Vox, the new launched product, addresses this segment. TechCrunch has a review of Vox and the alternatives here. [...]

Its really cool that they are adding more features, more integration (even though I'm getting a bit "tired" of every web site having a web 2.0 look) with other services and etc. And I applaud both for adding more privacy and lass spam, but the thing is, they (and Im finding almost every other 2.0 site) are missing the point.

You business model when reliant on Advertising for your primary income stream does not differentiate your service from any other. There is no value add for the end user. If there is no value add, and your undifferentiated and look the same how exactly do these sites expect to pull new users in a (I'm sorry to disagree with the author) space (SN) thats begining to see more competition?

I think MSN spaces still have the lock in effect with MSN messenger widespread, although its services are uncomparable with both Multiply and Vox.

People are reluctant to change and people still use MSN spaces not becoz it's good, but becoz their friends are all using MSN messenger. It's convenience that matters the most.

Another social networking website... whoa. I'm amazed. Err... I wonder how many more social networking websites techcrunch will review until the end of the year...

Great article - but Multiply and Vox are still too complex for the average user. etribes (www.etribes.com) is a UK-based "privacy-centric multimedia social networking service" (now there's a catchy label :) that's targeted at busy, early-majority users. We find that the more we cut out - the more our members like it. We do offer some pretty nifty features, such as MMS posting of photos and videos and a deskbar that lets members publish direct from their PC - but the point is to keep them really simple. KISS.
