I think I like Microsoft's idea the best. I am not big on SearchMash, tried it, but sites like Wink are already doing it better.

You shouldn't really refer to lab efforts as a "sandbox." Sandbox is a fairly established term within the SEO community. Saying Google is in the sandbox sounds really stupid.

This post's headline made me laugh anyway.

I assume that in the build-vs-buy situation they favour the build scenario atleast in their labs.. but as time goes...they finally end up buying the startups who offer better features than what their labs have developed

Thanks for the feedback on the AOL Greenhouse feed reader prototype. The underlying web services generally support OPML but it's not exposed in the UI yet. Perhaps we should think about exposing that to make it easier to play with.

It's still more rare than not for startups to turn their innovations into mainstream products or services.

That leaves an opportunity for Microsoft, Google, Yahoo! and AOL to do that. It's an opportunity for all as even though these larger companies incubate some of these ideas in their labs, they end up buying a startup. Of course, that is only if the incubation helps them appreciate the value of the target startups & their innovations. If the big guys end up doing a better job in their labs than the startups, well then there's no reason to buy, is there?

If you're interested in Google Searchmash's "suggest a search" feature, you might also be interested in my site, Zeedex. When you do a search, it will pop up lists of related terms in addition to normal search results (e.g. a search for "game" returns lists for "Board Games", "Milton Bradley Games" and "Nintendo Game Systems" etc.) Clicking on a term will add it to your search box, and then you can search on that term to find out more. But instead of the suggestions being automatically generated like at Searchmash and Clusty, at Zeedex the suggestions are created by users, similar to how wikipedia works.

Love the new Sphere integration...Its very cool.

I do think there are many more things these players are working on in their sand boxes...Google is working on visual search, commerce rating as an example.

I like innovation. I've always liked that companies build things that may or may not make it to market - it's cool to keep things fresh.

Ok, I'll bite: enlighten me on why it's "the most awkward discussion of Web 2.0" you've read in a while. I'll admit we've got a long ways to go, both in terms of the technology and the discussion we put together about it, but we've got to start somewhere. What would be most useful to me is if you would perhaps tell us how we can improve both--I'd be happy to hear your feedback. That, above all else, is what we're after with this admittedly modest release.... >> http://davemscom.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!217A4DFE679DE9D4!566.entry

@searchmash:
I'm still waiting for Goog using their massive searchlogs.
Something like "query a" is related to "query d" and "query g" ( and not only page xy and page lj ) suggestions, away from all these tagclouding elsewhere. Would be a "two dimensional" searchengine.

uh, i'm confused - the microsoft and yahoo sandboxes (and more recently google's) have been available and visible for a long time, including the incorporation into product lines and releases that are live...these are certainly not the most interesting ones out there (for example, have you seen yahoo's sliding scale search results bar interface? microsoft's new image manipulation and tiling tools? the stuff above is really lite fare compared to some of this other stuff...just my opinion)

Interesting projects, specially the Microsoft one. The only problem is that you never know whether or not these projects will ever be actually available to the average user.
