I've actually been using topix.net recently. its pretty good, though I wish when I told it a city it would stick with that city and then let me choose a mi. radius around the city if I wanted, rather than just giving me the surrounding area whether I want it or not.

It's great to know that local news has so much value - we launched ecolocal.com recently and are wanting to grow it significantly from it's current status as we know it's of value to people - after all local tends to be greener!

[...] Technology blog Techcrunch has reported that News search engine Topix.net has announced that has taken $15 million in additional funding from three large media companies, Tribune, Gannett and McClatchy. The company raised a round about 18 months ago for an undisclosed sum that was only said to be under $5 million. That funding came from Tribune, Gannet and Knight-Ridder, who have since been acquired by McClatchy. [...]

I didn't know that topix was such a big player. I've always avoided using them thinking it was just a one man show syndicating old news.

The classified section is a nice bonus feature to the site. Yet another way that the mainstream media is going to see classified ad revenue decrease. They might start to draw away some traffic from craigslist since it's easier to post (for now).

The UI change was a welcome addition. The last one did not compel me to use it. Topix.net still has not replaced any of my regular news sites, but I do like to go on the site and search for things from time to time. They have some robust features.

I really like the depth and variety of Topix's content, but I've had a tough time moving fm Google News as my main page to Topix's because of their UI. The Google News page is much more readable and adapts easily to my wide monitor, whereas Topix's page remains constrained and requires a lot more scrolling around to see more news stories. I hope they address the UI issue otherwise I just can't see replacing my Google News page for theirs.

true.

we do need competition in the search engine space.

everyone seems to have accepted the fact that
GOOGLE cannot be replaced.

i would love to see that day..when we have a real
competitor for GOOGLE.

Its about time new and more innovative search engines have joined the cyberspace scene. The same old engines can get rusty so a new face is more than welcome. Well done and good luck with your new ideas.

One thing that was NOT mentioned was their Craigslist-like Classified section, good resource.

Their AJAX - Graph Search is a stroke of Programming-Genius - it saves time for the Users and Bandwidth for Topix.

It should be adopted by other Companies with large Databases like Digg or Slash
