[...] Let’s begin by introducing TechCrunch. If you go to their page, they have 132K subscribed users. That’s a regular readership of 132,000+ people. It’s so popular that within several hours of announcing TechCrunch 8 in New York City, the 450 spots were taken, and I missed the deadline by a few hours.
Michael: Agreed - the EFF could do with a donation, I reckon. Hopefully we'll see this implemented for the next meet.

I won't be able to join you folks during the party, unfortunately.

$5 isn't exactly going to persuade anyone to do anything. Especially the type of people that would be attending this. If you want to get into the fee to encourage enrollment deal, it would have to be something considerable.

I do believe that TC should charge a token sum of perhaps $5 for party attendance. This prevents abuse of the system. The current setup allows people who have *no intention whatsoever* of attending, to reserve a place for themselves anyway. Levying the $5 fee would make people think twice before doing so. Besides, it's an awfully small fee that shouldn't hinder anyone serious about technology and Web 2.0 from attending. It also doesn't hurt that the money can go towards subsidizing the event, or even towards a couple of lucky draw prizes.

The current setup allows people who have *no intention whatsoever* of attending, to reserve a place for themselves anyway. Levying the $5 fee would make people think twice before doing so. Besides, it’s an awfully small fee that shouldn’t hinder anyone serious about technology and Web 2.0 from attending. It also doesn’t hurt that the money can go towards subsidizing the event, or even towards a couple of lucky draw prizes.

Thoughts?

[...] Mike Arrington with the good news for those who cant get a ticket. I’m not sure I’m allowed to say from who, but I managed to get a ticket so I’ll be in NY on the 16th. My first trip to the States as well, and all for a tech party, so here’s hoping it’s all good, which I’m sure it will be. Given there will now be 2 parties and if you’re chasing a ticket, I’d sign up to the waiting list quick smart. [...]
