Edgeio Closes $5 Million Series A Financing

Edgeio, a classifieds listing company that I co-founded last year with Keith Teare, announced a $5 million Series A financing today. The round was led by Intel Capital and also included an investment from Transcosmos. Previous angel round investors (Ron Conway, Jeff Clavier, Claudio Chiuchiarelli, Frank Caufield Jr., RSS Investors, Millenium Technology Ventures, Michael Tanne, Auren Hoffman, Sam Perry, Bill McCabe and Louis Monier) also converted from debt to equity in this round.

I won’t say much more here due to the conflict of interest (I remain on the board of directors of edgeio and am a stockholder). For other coverage, see BusinessWeek, VentureBeat, and Greg Sterling. I’ll add more links here as additional coverage comes in.

Our coverage of the edgeio launch in February is here.

Congrats and best of luck! I like your tag filters. I’m looking forward to seeing you guys get more critical mass of postings. I think you’re on the right track to making listings much more findable than on craigslist, but I still think there are some unsolved problems with tags that make them tricky to use correctly to filter data (for example, at some point you have to rely on the assumption that the things you want to find are tagged with the synonym you happen to be filtering on) although I think sheer quantities of data tend to lessen some of these problems (through generating common tags, better suggested tags, etc.). I’m looking forward to see how you guys overcome these hurdles, and I like the direction you’re going. Of course, I also think the more exposure to tag implementations (done well) people get, the better.

Nice site if it wasn’t slow - is it suffering from the techcrunch effect?

  4. Garth

Maybe now it will be somewhat usefull

hey, congratulations - didn’t realize that was your brainchild…i really like it, though i’d love to see you just import every zip code out there (mine doesn’t turn up)…and a much easier to use approach than scouring CL (yes, there really should be more than one CL alternative….)

looking forward to some cool new features and functions….

congrats mike. btw, do you sleep at all?

  7. Keith Teare

    Thanks Mike

Shame about your conflict. it would be great if people could hear your full views about edgeio. I’m sure there would be a lot of interest.

Maybe we should do a panel together at a Techcrunch event sometime.

    Mike:

Do you ever, as an attorney, feel disadvantaged in the world of computer programmers? I’m making my way to the Silicon Valley and at times, I get pretty scared. I’m an attorney, not a programmer. What if something goes wrong with my website and my programmer from India disappears??? What will happen then????? Issues like these keep me up at night :-)

Do you ever have similar thoughts? And, have you learned any programming languages??? I personally feel that at the age of 26, it’s too late for me to go back to school :-(

    Thanks,
    Vik

Nice idea. I like how the site works but disappointed that there are no entries for Seattle!

    Mike, congrats on the funding.

If you are looking for some constructive criticism, I would say Edgio could definitely improve it’s branding. “Listings from the edge” is a very vague slogan and doesn’t really communicate your value proposition as well as it could. Check out Al Ries book on Internet Branding, you can read the whole thing for free: http://ries.com/books-booklist-book12.php Hope that helps.

Hey Mike congratulations! All the best.

Can you talk about what kind of traction Edgeio is getting?

  26. Manish Chandra

    Keith and Mike, Congrats.

  27. Noel McKinney

Looks nice but really slow, couldn’t get more than two pages to load, acts like it was slashdotted. Not sure about the “Listings from the edge” slogan when it seems like a lot of $1M and up real estate listings, at least in Chicago. Can’t tell what the “edge” is here… something over my head I’m missing?

  28. Alex Brutin

    Hey Mike and Keith

    Congrats on the funding

    Best
