[...] Late last night I posted on a rumor that Google had acquired SpaceShipOne and was putting it in building 43 at Google HQ in Mountain View. More information started coming in immediately from commenters. One reader emailed to tell me Larry Page is on the Board of Trustees of the X Prize foundation (SpaceShipOne won their challenge), establshing a connection. But other commenters sent in recent pictures of SpaceShipOne at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. My source was good, but it was clear there was more to the story. To solve the mystery I said I’d send an iPod Shuffle to the first person that took a picture of the ship today and sent it to me. [...]

[...] Marc Canter says of Michael Arrington’s Google-SpaceShipOne replica blog postings: “Who the fuck cares about that bullshit!” I had a similar, albeit much tamer, question when I read these postings on TechCrunch over the weekend but the answer seems pretty obvious to me. First of all, based on Michael’s history of posting, I can tell that he’s no Google fanboy so I’m pretty Michael didn’t post this because he wanted publicly adore Google. So the reason he’d post something like this is simple — it was a Google-scoop in a world where everyone loves the latest kooky Google story and a scoop like this, if successful, promises to bring with it lots of great link juice, potential mentions in offline publications and, ultimately, lots of readers. And, again I don’t know Michael personally, but from the few times I’ve talked to him and heard him speak, if there’s one thing Michael does care about, it’s increasing his readership.
[...] While most of the NewSpace world was focused this past weekend on the X Prize Cup in New Mexico, there was a report on the Web business blog TechCrunch claiming that Google had bought SpaceShipOne and was installing it in its Silicon Valley headquarters, the Googleplex. That report, of course, was nonsense, since SS1 had been in the National Air and Space Museum for over a year now. As TechCrunch and eWeek later reported, the real SS1 is alive and well in the NASM, while Google has acquired a replica of SS1, one of several such replicas in existence (another was at the X Prize Cup). If you look closely at a photo of the replica being installed at the Googleplex you can tell it’s not the real thing: the replicas all bear the insignia of X Prize sponsors and Virgin, as SS1 looked when it made the two X Prize flights in September and October 2004; the real thing in the NASM has been “restored” to its appearance in June 2004 when it made its first space flight, lacking the X Prize sponsor and Virgin logos.
Awesome. I didn't think about the fact that they'd have acquired a duplicate. Shuffles to Chris for taking a video of the actual ship, and to Kevin and Karl for sending pictures of the fake one being unloaded at Google HQ (pictures were sent at nearly the same time). Guys, email me your names and addresses and a site that you would like me to reference. Mel, sorry, you just missed being first.

[...] Categorize this as another unsubstantiated Google rumor, but the word on the street is that Google has acquired SpaceShipOne and is putting it inside building 43 at Google headquarters in Mountain View, California.
It's a replica. I could send you a dated picture of the replica hanging in the lobby of the local airport here and claim that it was SpaceShipOne. It would look just like the real thing. Doesn't mean it is. Apply a little logic here folks.

to quote Mike: "I will send an iPod shuffle to the first person who sends me a picture of SpaceShipOne taken any time on Saturday, October 21, 2006."

Kevin, if you are into "rules", then it looks like I won... I took a picture (a moving picture) of the actual SpaceShipOne, not a piece of fiberglass that looks the part. That's like taking a picture of Ted Kennedy and telling everyone you saw JFK!

here it is again: http://www.searchles.com/links/show/youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dqzuddvcwno4

(just joking about the lies Karl, you seem like a good man)
