I think MySpace has very solid competitors banking on other things than social networking, other user and technology trends that are coming up now and in the future and I’m still not convinced that “social networking” is it. You never know what unforseen shift could happen.

I think the only mistake they can make is to assume they’ve got it in the bag – businesses based on public activity and popularity are fickle. One day you are Tom Cruise after Top Gun, the next day you’re Tom Cruise on Oprah’s couch and boom, there goes your market share.

I am personally excited to see a more level playing field at their level of the business. It’s going to be fun to see how this plays out.

Perhaps what I was attempting to say (”tightly integrated”) was that users think of MySpace as being a “social site” first and a video site “fifth, sixth, or seventh.” Moreover, users think of YouTube as being a video site “first.”

As you point out, it is very appealing for current MySpace users to use / switch to MySpace Video for their video needs. (This will certainly cannabalize YouTube’s traffic.) However, I’m simply suggesting that (1) it is more likely for a “non MySpace” user to use YouTube for video needs instead of MySpace and (2) I would’nt be surprised if MySpace gets surpassed by someone else in the next 5 years, and hence, the decline of MySpace Video – again my humble opinion.

If you would have gone to the MySpace video section you would have noticed that it is just that easy, if not easier to embed and share MySpace videos as it is to share/embed YouTube videos.

Not to mention over 30% of YouTube’s traffic comes from MySpace. A potential loss if MySpace users start to use the up until now not so popular feature at MySpace.

However, I’d like to point out one or two things that stick out in my mind as being liabilities for MySpace Video when compared to YouTube.

First, it would seem that MySpace Video is tightly integrated with a user’s MySpace page. (Whereas YouTube can be enbedded on almost any page on the internet.) Consequestly, it would seem less probable for a user to use a MySpace Video on any page other than a MySpace page. As such, if a user where going to embed a video into his or her MySpace page, he or she might be inclined to use MySpace Vidoe. If he or she where going to embed a video into any other page, he or she would be inclined to use YouTube.

Second, if I could place a bet right now, I would wager that MySpace is going to “become a Friendster” within the next 5 year window. (I realize that is pretty bold, but MySpace has a lot of “legacy problems / flaws” that are not easy to change. I won’t go into detailing them all now, but suffice it to say, MySpace was a “primary” answer to a social networking “pain,” FaceBook was a “secondary” answer to a social networking “pain,” and there still exists “tertiary” and additional layers of social networking “pain” that will still be addressed in successive course. When the next social site emerges that addresses “tertiary pain,” that will initiate the noticable end to MySpace.)

Bottom line, MySpace Video may end up thriving as long as page view counts to MySpace remains high, but with the plateauing and rapid decline of MySpace itself, so goes the fortunes of MySpace Video. YouTube, on the other hand, may experience a brief “roadbump,” but with their ability to cater to everyone, their future seems bright.
