[...] Nikon was so blind that they did not see my talent. How come i missed the selection for the free D80 DSLR elite trial user. I was so jealous reading the article on how Nikon market their brand new D80, by selecting users on flickr which they thought worth trying their D80 and give good remarks about it. I guess i was not selected because there isn’t any picture uploaded on my account yet that time. Nikon tactics is very good, “poisoning” the young padawan. [...]

@drew loika:

comparing a site like photo.net to flickr is like comparing geocities to facebook.

none of the features that make flickr the standard example for the web 2.0 philosophy are available in photo.net. what about social networking, tags, labels, intuitive UI, and last but not least easy editing/organizing?

[...] TechCrunch has an insightful article about using the “excitement of social networking/sharing sites” to market real world objects. The post [Use case: How companies can use photosharing correctly] clearly is talking about marketing things (cameras, in this case) and not necessarily services or media (music, baseball, etc…) “Nikon looked through Flickr, picked out a few great photographers, and sent them D80s, which is a really nice DSLR. They then used the photos they shot in a few advertisements… This kind of thing makes everyone happy: Flickr gets some recognition as a incubator of talent, Nikon gets some good will, and cool photographers get nice cameras.” [...]

I'm a huge a fan of Flickr as the next web2.0 fan, but another site that has a least as active a community, on an international scale, and that has been around for years, is photo.net. Of course I'm sure there are others, it just seems like we (the web 2.0 community and followers) get tunnel vision at times.
