You've got a point - people mistake "revolution" for a simple tipping point. YouTube became cool at the exact moment that the right technologies and trends were taking place.

But YouTube does get credit for flawless execution.

[...] It’s clear that this is a product that people will want to use, although more for the Bittorent content than for the for-pay tv shows. A comparison engine for premium tv is nice, but each service has its own viewer and rules (most don’t work with Macs, for example, although iTunes does), and consumers are not going to want to install multiple pieces of software just to view different tv shows. Also, upcoming search engines like CastTV are already doing a good job of searching both premium and user generated video content. It’s unlikely that TIOTI’s video search technology will be as good as what CastTV has developed. [...]

[...] Techcrunch has a good review of the company. CastTV is similar to Truveo, another start-up bought by AOL earlier this year after a year of operation. Like Truveo, CastTV searches for video information in ways that the traditional search engines haven’t – by creating a more sophisticated crawler that can dig behind flash, javascript and media-player plugins that stymie other crawlers. It then searches for all kinds of “meta” data that describe any video file it finds, including information from surrounding text. It then searches the Web again for similar looking data, and adds that to its database for that video too, if looks like a match. Here is more from Alex’s blog. [...]

the_one,

how is youtube revolutionary? the success of youtube is based on

1) ripping off copyrighted content and not being sued
2) proliferation of cable and dsl residential accounts
3) ease of creating video via digicams

I'll say that youtube created the easiest platform to upload and view videos, but their concept has been around since ifilm. Check out ebaumsworld, it was youtube before youtube, but it never gained the hype and mass adoption. It had the same ideas....user uploaded videos of pranks and outrageous videos.

I am glad to hear that more talented people are working to solve this hard problem. I can't wait to check out CastTV. Having worked on the Truveo and AOL video search engines, I know how challenging this task is. The good news is that the industry is making some progress on improving video search. Check out http://www.searchvideo.com (shameless plug). This is a demonstration site that combines some of the best aspects Truveo's and AOL's technology. It is completely open to developers - see http://developer.searchvideo.com. Our hope is that, by offering open APIs, innovation can start to happen in a lot more places, and the rate at which video search improves will increase.

Hi Jitendra,

Good question! that's why we've built blinkx -- check it out at www.blinkx.com. We use metadata, rss and that stuff, but also do speech recognition on videos with a lot of speech and video analysis (scene change detection, some video OCR, etc) to better index the video.

Please try it out and let us know what you think!

How about somebody actually doing video search that includes image recognition and voice to text translation...It seems like all these vendors are beating about the bush and not really developing the core technology needed here.
