Microsoft is looking to kick off its challenge to the iPod juggernaut today with its Zune music player 5 Reasons Why the Microsoft Zune May Succeed. We counter this with 5 reason’s the Microsoft Zune will almost certainly not be an iPod Killer.

Really, Microsoft should've licensed a design from Archos, not Toshiba.

Microsoft can position itself as a video provider of TV to DVR to pocket solutions. Media Center beats the ITV prototype for now, because it also records TV. Being able to put recorded TV from a Media Center right onto your Archos portable AV500 or AV604 makes a great deal of sense.

Also, the Archos video models are very different in size and shape than Apple's iPod. Microsoft needs to differentiate what it's offering; an iPod-like competitor is going to be an also-ran.

If you've seen the Toshiba Gigabeat, then you have half of the picture of what this player is all about. Just mix in bits of Wifi ad-hoc networks and music sharing and you're done.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I have to agree. I had static on Itunes 7 with some of my songs. It would be playing normally and than out of no where static will show randomly. On WMP it plays perfect....

And some Apple Fans insulted me on my page for me telling the world I have a problem with Itunes.

Unbelivable. The first softwre update in a while from Mac, and they screw it up. And the next software update is Leopard? But... Since the time of Itunes 6 - > 7 , Windows Released RC1 Beta for Vista, Live Gallery, Live Search, Q&A, Windows Mail, Office 2007 Beta, Jeez.

Since my iPod hard disk crashed beyond repair after 2 years of use, and if Zune is open to developers (as MS usually does), I'll buy one right away. I guess that interaction with Windows Media Player will make it the only digital music player apart from iPod that has a nice integration with PC software. Much like iTunes+iPod+Music Store made the iPod successful.

I have a windows mobile and am completely happy with it. If MS offers a better service I would definately switch. My opinion about apple went down a mile after I upgraded to iTunes 7. I couldnt believe they released such a buggy piece of software. It almost brought my laptop to a stall and I just couldnt get it to work properly with my iPod. Mind you I'm not the only one out there. The apple discussion group is overflowing with complaints about iTues 7. Everything went back to normal once I went back to iTunes 6. If this is any indication of future I would be serious concerned. Then again apple has no competetion at all on the design front. Look at the new shuffle! can anything look any better than that?

Microsoft is betting that Wi-Fi will be a compelling feature.

Our blog has a side-by-side look at the new video iPod, compared to the rumored features of Zune.

Differences in Zune include a larger screen (3"), FM-receiver, and Wi-Fi for sharing and DJ mode.

If those are not attractive to you, stay with iPod.

"Keep in mind that this is being produced by Toshiba - who usually makes good stuff"

Have you used a toshiba product lately? Complete crap.

"We’ll see how they market and sell this. If they market it right .. it just may steal some market share from Apple"

If they sell one unit they'll have taken market share. Silly statement. The question is, will they take enough.

"Compllllete rip off Media Center and WMP 11. Unbelievable."

What an ignorant statement. Only an idiot like albert would agree with you.

@13 Albert

I think The recent announcment of Leopard shows this fear. In leopard you now have the ability of Multiple Desktops. A nice feature. But this was available for Windows, on Power toys years ago.

https://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

I think its more intimidation by what Windows Vista could bring.

But than again if Apple wasnt here there may not have been a total revamp of windows. Nor a introduction of Zune.

So Kudos to Everyone.

It's true, everyone said that Microsoft would fail at its worst with the Xbox, and look at it now! Sony and Nintendo back then are like Apple now, who knows, with a couple of years, Microsoft's zune will be No.2 and then, finally, No.1! Zune definately has some promising features, so all Microsoft needs is a MASSIVE advertising campaing, and there, its a homerun. Just like what they did with the XBox around May in 2005. All facts men, all facts. Microsoft has the money, and if you have the money and the hardware success Microsoft DOES have, then hey, you should really re-consider, all of you "Apple-likes" (Windows Users (seriously, what are the chances you are part of the 1.5% that use Apple (97%:Windows 3%:Apple, Linux))).

I wont buy Ipod no more if Microsoft can offer a Cost Effective Competitor. Trust me, theres nothing special about the IPOD besides innovative design.

Microsoft has the funds to make a good product. Lets see how it hits and impacts the market. Afterall its been kept quiet for a long time. Maybe its time for us all to buy Stock in Microsoft and Toshiba... Just incase?

^^, Even the Mac users can agree that this COULD be something. If Microsoft could give me a good music product I will switch. Why? Because I have a Smart Phone by Microsoft that uplinks to Outlook and the only Mac software, Itunes is there only for the sole purpose of my Ipod. Btw.... Itunes 7. Compllllete rip off Media Center and WMP 11. Unbelievable.

They said the Xbox would flop too.

The Zune looks mighty impressive with the wireless data connectivity. Apple has been slacking off for too long... Zune could pose a serious threat to their dominance. Let's wait and see.

Microsoft's hardware is usually pretty decent. Keep in mind that this is being produced by Toshiba - who usually makes good stuff. Apple just released updated iPods and they are pretty slick, but Microsoft is a powerhouse. We'll see how they market and sell this. If they market it right .. it just may steal some market share from Apple

uh, like, who cares? i mean, there will be a market for Zune, but it had better be indestructably 'the second coming' with compelling media offerings for me to part with my Xmas-budgeted cash!
