[...] When Facebook launched News Feeds and Mini Feeds over a month ago without giving users any advance notice, the user community pitched a fit over privacy concerns. Lost in the noise perhaps, some analysts applauded the move at the time because they believed the changes actually made the site better for users. Despite the possibility that feeds would cause page views to suffer in the short term, Mark Zuckerberg and the team firmly believed that the new features would “increase information flow” (as always) and increase page views dramatically.
[...] It is fun to watch, not to be watched… Today Facebook enabled a feature that allows users to see, in a single condensed stream, individual changes made to friends’ profiles. You can read more about it here. This is really innovative. One reason Facebook has been so popular is that people become obsessed with reading the “Recently Updated” profiles of their friends. The difficulty however is that it is not always apparent what changed— even fanatics become aware that they are wasting more time than they would like by sifting through the same information for the umpteenth time. The new feature allows you to get at exactly what you want in real time. As a result users are going to be logging in even more often for to tap this instant source of gossip. With hundreds of friends, the average user will have a limitless supply of entertaining information. [...]

[...] On Tuesday, TechCrunch did a story on FaceBook’s new design setup. The story was simple enough, and the features were very appealing. Essentially, face book has added a Netvibes sort-of feature to users homepage, which allows you to see, via RSS, the latest updates to your friends’ pages (see the screenshot). This is a nice feature for a couple of reasons. (1) It flies directly in the face of the “pay per click” model that most sites (namely, myspace) are using to generate revenue. They are doing this because (2) it HELPS THE USER. It allows the user to see more without having to do more, which is always nice. However, they made a huge miscalculation in releasing this new feature… They didn’t get anyone’s permission to add it. [...]
