[...] All signs point to Apple having a movie download service ready to debut in the middle of this month. What’s most interesting is that Apple - and the stuidos supplying the flicks - ignored the objections of Wal-Mart and will price the movies below what they cost on DVD at the giant retailer. Wal-Mart and others already take a hit on most DVDs by using them as loss leaders to entice people to visit the store in hopes of selling them something else while they’re there. Considering the likely ease in burning these movies to DVD, it’s no wonder Wal-Mart is honked off. It’s nice to see the studios are actually interested in selling the movies in a marketplace people are already using and not bowing to the interests of one company. Wal-Mart currently owns 40 percent of the DVD market share. New releases on iTunes are projected to cost $14.99 with catalog titles ging for $9.99. Think Long Tail, people. This is going to be big.
I don't see that Netflix has anything to be worried about at all. This is for people buying movies, not renting them. I watch 4 or 5 movies per month (via Netflix), and I'm on the low end - lots of people watch 2-3 times that. I only buy maybe 1 or 2 per year (seriously, how many times will I want to watch Daddy Daycare?).

Unless Apple comes out with a time-limited movie that competes price-wise with renting, I don't see Apple and Netflix as being in competition.

Wal Mart (and Best Buy for that matter), on the other hand, do have something to worry about. I'm happy about that, as the fewer reasons I have to go to Wal Mart, the better.

"Am I the only one who thinks that renting a DVD for just a dollar from RedBox is the easiest thing to do these days."

No. But you are one of the very few customers in RedBox's 6 markets. Which is exactly the point...the Apple Movie Store will serve *all* US customers from day 1.

"And adding color to the story: WalMart is pissed off."

Haha...

I'll admit though that I would like to get this, but I wonder if its worth it in the end to have it on your iPod and not be able to watch it on your TV if a really good quality.

So with that said, I'm not too sure why Wal-Mart would be too pissed about it.

This makes me wonder why Sony hasn't done the same thing... rather than forcing a specific technology down our throats, I could buy a DVD and play it on my PSP or at home.

[...] Once Apple reveals the new widescreen iPod in the coming months, we’re going to hear a lot more about the iTunes Movie Store. After all, that iPod is going to be the hottest product on shelves come this Christmas season, and a digital store for movies that is as easy to use as iTunes is going to make for one hell of a struggling DVD sales season for Walmart. Serves them right, I say; maybe they could stop worrying about making jillions of dollars and offer employees better pay and benefits. BusinessWeek dropped the (long-expected) bomb this morning, and the usual gang is weighing in with thoughts around the blogosphere. « I Get (almost) No Spam [...]
