[...] This is an important trend to watch. I read recently that Myspace now accounts for almost 2% of all traffic to retail E commerce sites. That is, Myspace is driving real traffic to other sites and driving real transactions. With over 130 million profiles, it’s a force to be reckoned with and an opportunity waiting to be seized.
[...] Online social networking obviously drives a lot of page views, but it’s been questioned by many people whether those users click on ads very often. Hitwise says MySpace drives more retail traffic than MSN Search, but the conversion rate is another question. Sponsored communities are something that many if not all social networks seem to be moving towards, but the sponsored features sound very interesting. If this works, it could well be a model we see employed more often. Perhaps someone will sponsor a MySpace IM that funcitons. [...]

[...] Just look at the multitude of business models that Myspace is running now - straight forward advertising, sponsorship, music downloads and I’m sure films etc to follow. See this for a GigaOM view of how users could drive advertising to other users. Some evidence of this also comes from the fact that MySpace is now referring more users to ecommerce sites than any MSN.
I think the biggest mistake being made here is assuming all myspacers are teens. I was talkied into having a profile (I'm 33) by two of my best friends - a 31 year old female mental health professional in FL., and a 24 year old female city webmaster in TX. It is currently the best method for me to contact either of them - and if I were selling anything, myspace seems like a natural for reaching these professional women.
