Webshots Redesign Launches, Video Coming

CNET owned Webshots, a massive property with 420 million photos, relaunched moments ago with a new interface and a number of feature changes.
The most notable changes are to the limits on photo uploading. Free accounts are now able to upload 1,000 photos plus an additional 100 photos per month (the additional photos are applied retroactively and continue to accrue even if not used). Premium accounts, which are $30 per year, allow for 5,000 initial photos plus 500 more per month. Photos are archived at original resolution, and resized for presentation on the site only if larger than 2400×2400.
In another notable move, Webshots will be allowing users to upload video to their webshots accounts starting in September. Video will be transcoded into Flash video for viewing on the website. Our long-time opinion has been that photo sharing sites needed video as well, to allow people to store vacation and other photos and videos in a single location. Look for this feature eventually on Flickr as well.

The new design very much looks web2.0ish. Nice and clean. The price is also not bad at $30/year. That provides them with sustainable business model as well.

The best products give a free trials. This product has the potential to land in the hall fame in Web 2.0. Try it while it is still free !
Has anyone tried uploading/accessing fotos on WebShots. Other than their homepage/login page etc., there currently seems to be a problem accessing uploading/photos…returns a connection timed out/server not responding. Techcrunched ?

Smugmug has had google maps geotagging mashup, video uploads, massive bandwidth and storage space (both unlimited for pros), and much more.
Sorry if I’ve missed any articles that you have done on smugmug. If you haven’t you should maybe give them some love
They have a layer on top of a Flash ad. Sniffing through the code, they have transparency from a 3rd-party ad server on the Flash embed tag, which I don’t think is common. Does this mean to run a Flash ad on Webshots now, you must have this attribute? Can’t say I would like relying on an ad that could potentially disrupt my users’ experience on the site. Went through their “advertise with us” section and found nothing about this.

Just wanted to pop in really quick to address the initial “free trial” comments. The vast majority (and by vast, I mean nearly 100:1) of Webshots users are free. Webshots has always offered a free model, and will continue to do so. While I certainly would never discourage people to “try it while it’s still free,” I should let you know that that the “still free” period is infinitely longer than the initial posters may have led you to believe.

re ads, we deliver third party ads in a way that even if the ad creative breaks, it does not damage the rendering of the rest of the page. hope that helps.

martin- Are you certain? If I “Save Complete” the Webshots home page, then replace the IFRAME ad with an ad that does not have the allowtransparency attribute set, the expanding menu for “browse” goes underneath the Flash, obscuring everything below “good times.”
This is the same Webshots that put all of that spyware on my computer when I wanted a cool screensaver like 10 years ago?
