Why is everyone calling this a contest? it looks more like a blatant viral marketing of the worst kind.

Viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that seek to exploit pre-existing social networks to produce exponential increases in brand awareness, through viral processes similar to the spread of an epidemic. It can often be word-of-mouth delivered and enhanced online; it can harness the network effect of the Internet and can be very useful in reaching a large number of people rapidly.

Unfortunately, the most direct results of this contest is two fold 1) the increases the amount of junk mail in my friends email accounts. 2) a map to my friends that “big brother CrunchGear” can exploit for further marketing.

the advertising billboard that is TechCrunch really needs a Flickr-like badge (or Digg-like widget, more exactly) that can cross-promote other TechCrunch goings-on. I'm completely oblivious to things going on in the other Tech sites - the video stuff, the Euro and UK stuff, etc.

I suggest getting rid of one of those useless search buttons on the right nav bar and putting something value and traffic-generating there. actually, that's it - replace that 'TechCrunch Network' box with the streaming widget thing - that would do more for cross-promoting the TechCrunch sites than those static links - none of which I've ever visited. I never even noticed that thing over there before. I had to find the 'archives search' button one time, and that was painful, but I eventually figured it out.

if you simply must have the static links, then do a YardBarker-like drop-down menu with the TechCrunch Network sites listed.

And while I'm at it, the top nav bar (About, Contact, Index, etc.) seems completely misused. I'm probably not the target audience - that being the advertiser - but maybe I should be the target audience? I think so. For instance, what does 'Index' mean? No idea. And who cares about an 'Archives' link? Give me a 'Search' link instead - of course it's going to be searching archives - I'm a techie - these things I know.

To get back to the contest, I just don't see it. Maybe the appeal is a guy thing, deduced from the posts above. A thrill akin to cramming as many people as possible into a phone booth. Or.... a veiled product placement deal. Hmmm.

"it's on like a chicken bone" is supposed to rhype - it's awn like a chicken bawn, in the vernacular of that one guy on gilligans island and it's supposed to mean "I am prepared to win/finish this contest and you and your meddling friends will not stop me," at least on the show. I'm thinking you're reading a bit too much into this, in general, though.

so I decided to use the phrase “It’s on like a chicken bone” - abhorent though it is - in order to inform the readership that the contest was in fact on like a chicken bone.

Is "it's on like a chicken bone" some sort of zen condition that you just have to experience? Otherwise I'm not sure how using the phrase itself in the implied definition helps out.

re: chicken bone - it means we're continuing the contest. It originally seemed like we didn't have enough entrants, but now it seems like we have plenty, so I decided to use the phrase "It's on like a chicken bone" - abhorent though it is - in order to inform the readership that the contest was in fact on like a chicken bone.

After googling the internets I've found that "It's on like a chicken bone" is a phrase used by a contestant on 2004's The Real Gilligan's Island. I'm not sure if it should be parsed as it is written above as drawing a line in the sand against oppresive forces, or if it should be read in the valley girl way of "It's on, like, a chicken bone" maybe pertaining to some tasty BBQ sauce from KFC.

Is this some hip phrase used by the kids these days? Am I stuck in squaresville?

The comments in the first thread were legitimate, but it's sort of ridiculous to think that one can't skim over a post every so often. It's a contest that affects our entire network and thus I believe it to be pertinent to TechCrunch, just as it is to CrunchGear.

The comments in the first thread were legitimate, but it’s sort of ridiculous to think that one can’t skim over a post every so often. It’s a contest that affects our entire network and thus I believe it to be pertinent to TechCrunch, just as it is to CrunchGear.

Hey TechcrunchReader,

Michael and crew knew there would be remarks such as yours. It's too predictable.

Without innovation and change, things get old pretty quickly. So, bring it on Michael.

I thought Techcrunch would listen to the comments in the below post:
http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/08/23/crunchgear-this-week/

I come to Techcrunch to read about new web 2.0 startups. Techcrunch normally does a great job with this. However, such posts as these and other posts, such as Google scoring an advertising deal with eBay, in my opinion, only decrease the quality of Techcrunch. Just continue doing what you do best: review new web 2.0 startups. They don't have to be perfect. Just review something new, not a post promoting a contest at CrunchGear or about Google's advertising.
