CrunchGear.com is going strong and hopefully you’ll mosey on over to check out some hot gadget action. This week has been packed with news including a gaming mouse from Microsoft, the Habu and secret shots of the TiVo Series 3 that will make grown men cry.

We also have a contest coming up… read all about it later today. We’ll be offering a Kodak V603 camera and a Motorola Q. We are clearly trying to buy your love.

Again, why not just post advertising on the right hand side of your site regarding your other network blogs. I come here to read about Start-ups not Gadgets - for that I use Engadeget.com ;)

    Don’t worry, it’ll die a slooowww death…

How this for seriously weird? I got a spammed over my Yahoo! mail client and I put keyword “SignCode - Aruba SpA” into google. 235,000+ sites that are spam?

Reported it to google but jesus……………

Not to bag on Crunch Gear, but it seems to me that all gear blogs (Gizmodo, CrunchGear, EnGadget), all cover the same things, I mean literally the exact same products, within days of each other.

The way to differentiate yourself becomes the quality of the writing, and I think that’s where CrunchGear falls flat, at least for me. The posts aren’t long enough, and they don’t have a “personality” to me. TechCrunch has a certain voice it uses, and so does Gawker, but CrunchGear just doesn’t.

Just an opinion - I don’t mean to troll. I stil read CrunchGear, still think it’s good, but I prefer Gizmodo.

Tcrucnher2: I agree that this blog should remain as a startup technology
blog only.. Do you have any idea that how will a platform with automated
search, find and obtain will be?

    gr8!!!

How is CrunchGear a review site, when the majority of the articles use photos from other review sites, and the content is just a re-hash of the wording found on other review sites?

Stop re-hashing…start reviewing hardware you have access to, and use your own photos.

  7. Ricardo Tohmé

This only adds to the trend I’ve seen lately here on TC… sometimes it seems quality of content is gone for good. I really hope they can get their act together.

  8. Hika

I agree with everyone. Get rid of the stupid gadget posts. I’m a software developer so don’t try and slot me into a demographic of a nerd just because of it. I’m not interested in gadgets, only new software ideas and startups. Keep it up and I wont read your site at all.

  9. BREAKING NEWS (commentKing)

Kiko’s ebay listing has just been removed!!, at the time of removal there was only 1 bid!

ogijun( 0 ) New eBay Member (less than 30 days) US $49,999.99 Aug-18-06 20:06:41 PDT

This user has no history, no other bids, no ratings, no comments.

Kiko, has either been acquired or they didnt think it would sell.

Wow, will the Internet ever be the same again?

  12. Comment King (BREAKING NEWS)

lol…probly not, no its just that i was just on the auction, i refreshed and it was gone, was pretty cook at the time :)

  13. Skeptic

I must say, I will share my dissapointment with this post. While I do think the ‘net effect’ can be positive for all the *.Crunch.* sites, I’d prefer to see some section in the right-nav area that shows ‘headlines from CrunchGear’ than this approach. But then again, if I went and launched DeadGear.com, I’d cross-post like a maniac too.

BTW - Comment King - way to not add value to a thread, good job!

  14. Tcruncher2

did anyone read my post regarding “SignCode - Aruba SpA” into Google.

I think something is seriously strange with that? No idea but you are talking 235,000 different DOMAIN NAMES?????????

  15. TechcrunchReader

I also agree with the above comments. I, along with most other people, come to Techcrunch to read about new startups. It even says on Techcrunch’s about page that Techcrunch is about “profiling and reviewing new Internet products and companies”. If you really want to promote the other “crunch” sites then display the feed for those on the right. Besides from just this post, I feel the quality of Techcrunch slowly getting worse, ever since around May or June. I want to read about interesting news regarding startups. I’d rather be told about a new web 2.0 startup than how Facebook added a “blog-like notes feature”. Small information about big companies is not interesting; profiles about new startups are much more interesting. That’s just my opinion, but I’m sure there are other Techcrunch readers who feel that way. Unless the quality of Techcrunch improves (such as by not having posts similar to these meant to promote other “crunch” sites and by having more profiles about new startups), I don’t think Techcrunch will be known for being a great source for information about web 2.0 for much longer.

Michael A., reading the above comments, how do you feel about this. I’m curious to know what you think?

Some of the comments are pretty intense and some were trying to be nice.

I do agreed that CrunchGear is a day late with their gizmos and gadgets post. I see more or less the same items from Gizmodo 2-3 days earlier.

So what is with the B&W 802 speakers in the drawing but they were never posted/talked about on crunchgear?

  18. Michael Arrington

Wow, a near-100% negative comment group. Never seen that. Close, but this is a winner.

A few thoughts. Most of you are known trolls on this and other blogs. You only say negative things, and you say them often. You haven’t crossed the line into threatening my life territory, so the comments haven’t been deleted. But what you are saying is just washed out by your overwhelming and constant negativity.

For the guys who are asking “how is crunchgear different?”…well, in a few ways. Remember the site is only a week old and the editor, John, was out here for our party for most of that week. Once things settle down you will see weekly product comparisons, sort of face-offs between mp3 players, cell phones, whatever. The business models of the other guys, which just pay a very small fee per post, don’t incentivize those kinds of posts because they are much harder to do.

In the end, John’s vision for CrunchGear is a cross between a blog and a CNET reviews, with a lot of subjectivity.

And a note on how we are copying Gizmodo and engadget. There are two reasons for this. The first is that those guys, particularly engadget, rarely link to eachother even though they steal stories all the time. We’ll never do that. If something is interesting, we’ll write about it, but there will always be a link. It’s something John and I strongly agree on and a core principle of techcrunch sites.

The second reason is that CrunchGear is just getting started and isn’t on all of the press lists yet, so the new news isn’t getting to them all the time. That will change in the coming months.

  19. Tcruncher2

“Most of you are known trolls on this and other blogs. You only say negative things, and you say them often. You haven’t crossed the line into threatening my life territory, so the comments haven’t been deleted. But what you are saying is just washed out by your overwhelming and constant negativity.” - I mainly only read this blog, so I’m not being negative - rather providing constructive feedback. I constantly check this site for Web 2.0 Start-Ups and as a software engineer I love this blog.

I understanding your are trying to expand your blog network and CrunchGear “isn’t on all of the press lists yet, so the new news isn’t getting to them all the time. That will change in the coming months.” - but still TechCrunch is just that - focusing on Web 2.0 and start ups.

Your site generates huge impressions based on user’s coming here to read commentary specifically related to Web 2.0 - not on posts that remain for 6/7 hours at the top of your blog relating to other blogs you are running.

Don’t get me wrong Mike, I know you are trying to establish a business here - but remember that your business is your readers, don’t acuse us of “being a 100% negative comment group” because its a vast generalisation that isn’t credible.

Listen to what we are saying - and let’s keep TechCrunch rolling on with great stuff ;)

  20. Tcruncher2

ps - put that javascript code you have located on your crunchboard site onto techcrunch

  21. Ricardo Tohmé

    Michael:

I’m sad this is your response to such an overwhelming reaction from your readers. I can only speak for myself, and I’m no troll at all. Usually I don’t even publish my website URL so my comments aren’t considered splog.

I would really like to see your content getting better, that’s it!

  22. Michael Arrington

Thanks guys, I appreciate the comments. Yes, we are listening.

  23. anon

I’m not a known troller, but tech-crunch has steadily declined in quality over the past six months.

  24. troll

i am a troll! I admit it. I even live under a bridge!

  25. Ted

Im liking this site more then engadget.

  26. Skeptic

So was I considered a troll for today’s comment? I thought it was fairly constructive… oh well.

  27. Bob Boydston

Well…given all the negativity and a defensive retort, I’m glad that everyone is playing “make up.” :)

My take on this thread is that Michael cannot announce the opening of one his own sites? That’s sad! But, could it be there is a little bit of envy here? Forget that I didn’t say that! :(

The truth, however, is that CrunchGear is a “new” site…and it looks kinda Web 2.0 as it does allow comments (It’s more like a blog, however.). So, TECHNICALLY, he is doing his job.

I say, let’s give the guy some slack!

If he continues to “advertise” CrunchGear in the “articles” section, I say then we have a beef.

An observation: Isn’t it interesting how WE have taken some possession of this site? The tenor of the conversation is that of people who feel they actually own a share in the site. That Michael (who is the owner) has made some changes that we don’t like has caused us to comment. Michael, in turn, is LISTENING and, in turn, making new changes to reflect what WE want.

Now this is truly WEB 2.0!

  28. blake robinson

Just bear with us everyone. We’re working on a lot of material for CrunchGear that is going to distinguish us from the crowd. Keep in mind, we turn two weeks old on Thursday, it takes some time to really start to groove.

  29. Bob Shous

I just hope that CruchGear doesn’t end up where TalkCrunch has, doing absolutely nothing! Come on guys you haven’t had a post in 2 whole months and you claim it’s “A weekly podcast about new web 2.0 companies”.

TalkCrunch just might be the next addition to the “dead pool”! Hey.. at least you can blog about it on TechCrunch =P

I love that about you Mike, even when you lose you win =)

  30. Alex

Michael, I wouldn’t exactly say that all of the responses here have been from trolls. Most, if not all, have been been constructive feedback.

When you look at it, it seems like it is a common idea that they don’t like the advertisements coming through the posts.

Maybe you could opt to add something similar to TechCrunch like you do with CrunchBoard, but with updates from GrunchGear?

Blake I fully understand it takes time and good luck with it - I just expect to come to TechCrunch for Web 2.0 information, not the other sites in his network.

But apart from that, keep up the good work :)

  31. Rob Poitras

“An observation: Isn’t it interesting how WE have taken some possession of this site? The tenor of the conversation is that of people who feel they actually own a share in the site. That is common business sense and has almost nothing to do with web2.0 anything. I guess proctor and gamble are “web 2.0″ too since they listen to their customers and change the product to better meet customer needs.

I do agree that if he keeps pushing crunchgear on the TC blog then it will take away some quality from TC but not that much for it to be an issue.

  32. Alex

Rob, it has nothing to do with Web 2.0

This is what good business practice is.

Owners should always be open to feedback so that their customers or viewers or whatever feel apart of the product. It also helps to make sure that the word of mouth is positive, and not negative. They should be searching to perfect their product. Thats what good business is. It’s not just having a good product or service, you need to do more than that to have something special.

Changes that you make are not always going to be received with open armed support but how can you expect them to be? What is in your best interests might not be in the viewers.
