SocialMeter is a handy tool for checking to see how many people have tagged an URL in any of a number of social bookmarking services, including Digg and Del.icio.us. It was created by Brian Holt, of San Diego. More a project than a product, I write about it here mostly because it’s interesting and useful.
Steve Rubel says it’s “handy not just for blogs, but for brand and corporate sites too.” 3spots, who writes a great blog by the way, created the bookmarklet on the SocialMeter page. I ported that bookmarklet into the metabookmarklet system Blummy (search for socialmeter).
The Digg search could be especially useful as a quick way to prevent duplicate submissions, though Digg search is difficult so I wouldn’t depend on it. It would be great if there was an RSS feed available. I may try to create one using Dapper, another service I profiled here last week.

It’s alright, but I think I still prefer to use the individual sites (del.icio.us, technorati) straight up.
I love simple things like this.
Well done!
You are always welcomed in New York.

Hey, thanks for the link Marshall. Enjoy!
A nice project with little use though.
Please help this plant.
He only wants to survive.
Make a good thing, and save him.
Or at least tell your buddies about him.
God bless you.

techcrunched?
Pretty darn good site. I posted a few suggestions for them on my link on my name above.
Thanks!
Congrats for your party, that’s how good parties finish.
Wow, this is awesome. I hope they add an RSS feed soon.
I thought this was really cool until I tried it. I know for a fact that my site has been linked 27 times on del.icio.us, but it said 0. The only one it pulled up was Google links.
Lelia, Sorry about that. The site was simultaneously TechCrunched, Digged, and Delicioused so Delicious temporarily blocked Socialmeter’s IP due to the massive traffic. I’ve made made several changes that prevent the IP from being blocked.
still does not work for delicious
anshul — little use? what do you mean
marshall, very handy for our line of work — thanks for this
I created Tagground.com a few months back - its a site that provides similar url searching functionality. Type in a url and it returns a list of the tags people have associated with the url from the various social bookmarking networks.
It’s a personal side project - so it’s more of a utility than a web product. There are some issues querying the various APIs - you should read the FAQ for more details.
I think a lot of people would find it helpful, so I made it public.
I’m not impressed, my blog (http://GraphOilogy.blogspot.com/) is bookmarked by 14 people on del.icio.us but SocialMater gives a 0 (same for Digg and reddit).
Well, great job, but doesn’t work 100%.
When you click on the names on the left (technorati etc…), the results are different. Socialmeter has to work, but I think it’s a very good idea
Thanks.
