[...] TechCrunch party yesterday The TechCrunch party at August Capital yesterday was great. August Capital building is quite easy to miss, but a steady stream of cars moving in the same direction down Sand Hill Road provided a clear marker of where the things were happening. There are quite a few photo sets on Flickr from Dan Farber, Jeremiah Owyang, Thomas Hawk and official photographer of the TechCrunch part Scott Beale aka Laughing Squid. The TechCrunch party has grown quite far from small 1-2 person startups presenting in Michael Arrington’s living room while cursing the wireless keyboard to the full-blown tents and stands as well as professional DJing by Pandora.
[...] Tonight at the Techcrunch party (Event Wiki) was amazing, the food, drinks, and swanky Sand Hill location was an event to remember. Mike Arrington has really positioned himself as the center of Web 2.0, pretty impressive. I ran into quite a few folks, and I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves (and partly because I’ve been graciously invited by my cousin to visit the Boeing Headquarters first thing in morning!) There were a lot of familiar faces, cool technology, flowing drinks and food. View the last Techcrunch 6 Party Photoblog. [...]

[...] Tonight TechCrunch had their massive TechCrunch 7 Party at August Capital in Menlo Park. Over 750 people were in attendance and since Mike Arrington dubbed me the “official photographer”, I felt that I should probably shoot a few photos. Contratulations to Mike and the whole TechCrunch crew for another great party.
[...] With all the web 2.0 hype in Silicon Valley, it feels good working on a solid solution to a serious problem. While I love reading Michael Arrington’s TechCrunch and think some of the young companies he profiles are smart with incredible prospects, I’m really happy to be sitting here in my office Friday @ 6pm and not making my way over to the TechCrunch August Capital Party - where the final pair of tickets went for $501 on eBay. I have a business model that doesn’t depend on acquiring 3m uniques, being bought out by Yahoo! or Google within a year, or relying on Google AdSense ads. Not that there’s anything wrong with that…it’s just not the path I’ve chosen. [...]

[...] And that is exactly the crux of the problem. Maybe you get featured on TechCrunch, maybe you get to use your VC money to sponsor a party, but getting mainstream traction is so much more difficult than that. And even mainstream exposure doesn’t always help. Just look at Odeo, they got a NYTimes expose on the day they opened shop. Now, a year later, they are still hanging in there (against my prediction), but where is their market? Where is the business model? How much money do they have left? When are they going to close shop? Here is when I would invest in a Web 2.0 company that seems to be shooting for mainstream success: when I hear the company name being brought up by one of my freshman students. Until then, I have to assume that they have some mindshare with the early adopters, but definitely no more than that and definitely not enough to become profitable. [...]
