[...] We covered Amazon Unbox pre-launch and post-launch. After its initial launch, Ubox received wide criticism, most notably from BoinBoing about its user-unfriendly license agreements. Unbox has by far the best meta-data on movies and TV shows, incorporating plot summaries, release information, production stills, and consumer ratings. Unbox sells from 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros. [...]

[...] Amazon’s movie download site, called Unbox, appears to have gone live today. There’s no link yet on the front page of Amazon, but the direct link at unbox.com works. We covered early previews of the site last month. Shows may be purchased or rented. For purchases, TV episodes are $1.99, movies are between $10 and $20. Rentals are $3. [...]

[...] Considering that the average DVD costs about $17, a $14.99 protected movie - ahem - downloaded to a fancy new touchscreen iPod or Zune will definitely rip the DVD sales and rental market a new orifice. That said, Amazon is also planning this same thing, which means competition is going to get hot and heavy this holiday season. This also means that Apple had better think about refreshing the video iPod in the next few weeks or there’s going to be some pushback as customers flock towards larger, widescreen portable video players.
[...] It’s hard for me to get excited about this in terms of creativity, there’s not much new here - but at a time when AOL is giving so much away, it’s an interesting play to make themselves the dominant download-to-own portal on the web. Competitors MovieLink and Cinemanow both offer rentals as well as purchase, Guba wins on price to own and Sony’s newly acquired Grouper P2P technology may win on speed of download. Amazon has a forthcoming desktop video on demand client as well. But for now at least, if you’re looking to own and it’s selection from major studios you seek, then AOL may be the place to go when these partnerships come online. I’m still waiting for someone to partner with the studios and do something truly innovative, we’ll see how long that wait lasts. AOL [...]

All these video services are identical to Movilelink and CinemaNow (except Amazon apparently won't offer rentals, making it a non-starter; this isn't music, folks). However ML and CN have three fatal flaws: 1) Windows only, 2) terrible selection and 3) far too short, 24 hour viewing window. The DRM works fine and is appropriate.

Looks pretty ugly (I wonder why they don't hire a grapghic artists or someone from the desktop customization world to make a skin for it).

But will it work? (I wonder if what program they used to make this player? DeskopX?)

People need to realize that media is shifting and any person that enters into this arena and can garner the support as well as make some deals for content will make money. I think this will have to be a non renting venture as DRM may be a hassle. Pricing will dictate success. At leat in my humble opinion.
