Perhaps one of the things going against Google Talk is that its a bit too geeky even for its own good. After all, I must admit that I don't have a single friend who is on Google Talk or has asked me to join them on Google Talk.

Its a lonely world if I have to IM myself... ;p

Stats like that are impossible to figure when it comes to Jabber/XMPP. The number of Gmail accounts? That's larger than the true number of chat users. The number of people who logged into the greater Jabber network through Gmail? Then I count. But when I go on using Google Talk / Gmail Chat / Psi / Meebo, I always also get logged into MSN/WLM and ICQ/AIM, because I have those transports installed. (Please note that, in response to some ignorant comments on this page, I feel it necessary to point out that ICQ and AIM are the same thing these days).

Interoperability is the key, that that's where Google Talk wins out. With full federation to the 100% interoperable Jabber network, and the ability to add transports so that you can also talk to the other major IM networks, and one of the best voice protocols out there, Google Talk takes the cake. All they (and the greater community, really, since it's all mostly the same) need, is time.

I don't think any of these figures mean much to Google's strategy. It's all so dotBomb. AOL has been playing "fingers out of our network" for a while, and have tried to repeatedly shut-out programs like Trillian, MSN, Fire, or IM2. Google has decided to go the route of using a much more open network protocol, and they get BASHED for Comscore not being able to quantify their hostag... er... customers? I think that's ridiculous.

Not only are they new, but Google is leading the way to Web 2.0 with an extremely extensible API driven system of managing the web. Meanwhile, MSN/AOL/Yahoo begin tentative steps toward opening their courtyards. It'd be more interesting if it could be distinguished which of Google's "successes/failures" are major company initiatives and which are essentially pet projects. I don't have ANY impression that Orkut was anything more than an experiment. If everything needs to be a raving, frothing success, where is innovation without the possibility of mediocrity? Eh.

Regarding Instant Messaging market share, less than one year ago, the percentage for the USA looked slightly different, at least according to a piece published by CNET's News.com:

Yahoo, Microsoft join IM hands

right now I have 9 people online in the gmail-integrated chat, only one of them is using the GTalk client, they (we) all just use the integrated version, we almost always have gmail open, why bother with a seperate client?

I am sure the number of actual users of google's chat are MUCH higher that the number that use the GTalk client.
