[...] According to the article TechCrunch wrote about it, StumbleUpon receives an average of 2.3 million pageviews daily. There have also been 2.3 million downloads of the Firefox extension with 6 million sites reviewed, and 14 languages supported! That’s pretty impressive. Essentially, the members of StumbleUpon collectively share some of the best sites on the web. Now that they have made a toolbar for IE users, I’m sure we can expect them to become even more popular beacuase afterall, it really is a fun way to “channel surf.” [...]

There appears to be a fixed list of sites that appear, in order, when you click the Stumble button; if you leave the site and return, you have to stumble through everything you saw before to get to anything new. Given that the idea is to encounter new content, this seems like a bug.

Without knowing how often the list is updated, I have little reason to return. Is there any way to at least randomize the delivery order?

[...] did WHAT? » Bookmark on del.icio.us For nearly a year now, I’ve been following a cool social browsing addon called StumbleUpon. As oflast week, the StumbleUpon addon is available for Internet Explorer, and is one of my favorite addons. Here’s how it works: As you browse the web, whenever you come across a page that is particular interesting to you, you can click the “thumbs up” button in your toolbar. And if you don’t like a page, you can hit the “thumbs down” button. You don’t have to rate every page, just the ones you feel strongly about, and clicking a button in the toolbar is a pretty simple way to give feedback. Now, as StumbleUpon learns what you like and don’t like, it automatically matches you with clusters of users who have similar preferences. Then, as you browse, you can choose to “stumble” to pages that are preferred by other people who are similar to you. You don’t have to share your votes with anyone else, but if you opt-in, you help other people find cool new sites too. Om Malik says that it is “simply addictive”, and many others agree. I find that StumbleUpon can recommend content to me that is more interesting and relevant to me than many of the other content filters like techmeme or digg. The addon was initially developed for Firefox, and quickly became popular. But a tool like StumbleUpon gets smarter when there are more people using it, and the team soon needed to extend the feature to the majority of Internet users who use Internet Explorer. News.com and TechCrunch have both commented on the business case for shipping on Internet Explorer, and that’s easy enough to understand. But how difficult or expensive was it? Well, Justin from the StumbleUpon team told me, “Our experience porting our Firefox addon to IE7 has been smooth and relatively painless - actually a lot easier than we expected. Within a month we built an IE7 toolbar implementing all desired functionality as well as a few features exclusive to the IE platform.” Download it and try it out! Do you have a great add-on that you need help porting to Internet Explorer? Let us know how we can help you. Joshua AllenTechnical Evangelist [...]

I can't imagine why anyone would be excited about having millions of IE users suddenly rating the StumbleUpon sites -- the quality of the experience is bound to go down. What early adopters think is cool is often much more interesting than what the population at large thinks is cool.

Surf The Web More Intelligently With StumbleUpon...

It may seem like a lot of trouble, but StumbleUpon is able to learn fast because it matches your ratings with other users in its database to find like-minded people (which in theory should be interested in similliar pages)....

The potential danger here, perhaps, is that the more people discover stumbleupon, the more it becomes like the rest of the web. As the number of users go up, the quality of the 'stumbles' seems to go down.

But its still an amazing concept for integrating blogging, bookmarking, and community. I've enjoyed it immensely.

Its been availibe for IE since the beggining. This was just an overdue upgrade to add the latest features IE users were missing.

Reguardless -great software. The developers are very moral people too and that is all the more reason to support them.

I'm with Jeremy, I have been using it in IE for quite a while (almost a year), not sure why this is news.

What IS news is using it with the RanduMBIzEr (not news because it's new, but because relatively few know about it). We have a tool at Dumbfind that allows you to one-click submit a site (or page) you are looking at and then we serve you another site that is related. It is sort of like a directed version of Stumbleupon.

They work very well together too. I often stumble and then if I see something I like I will hit the randumbizer to see more stuff like it.

It is also good for research. For instance, I was doing research on venture capital firm and I put in one that was appealing and just hit the randumbizer cycling through other VC's that were deemed related.

There is a bookmarklet and a toolbar.

I'm a fan of stumbleupon...

I'd be interested to know how much analysis they do for which sites to stumble on and how much its just random. Anyone know if they are doing pretty intensive analysis or just matching by category?

I don't get it. I've been using StumpleUpon in IE and Maxthon for at least 2 years, probably longer. This is not new.
