[...] If you’re on top of the game, you practically don’t have to do anything to get attention. After all, attention is the one thing you have in abundance. But if you’re one step down in the hierarchy, then you’re main goal is to get attention - not just any kind, but what they call crossover appeal. This is what Kanye had. This is what Youtube had. Keep it easy. [...]

Remember when YouTube went down the other day? When it finally came back online this was the last video posted. I can't say for sure if this is what caused it, but it's got to be the craziest video I've ever seen. You can't even imagine how it ends – you'll have to watch the video to know for sure.

Just check out the site and you'll see how many views it has. It's rapidly becoming one of the most viewed YouTube videos and I'm pretty sure it will be one of the featured videos in the next few days.

[...] The Techaddress blog caught my attention today. “Earlier this week we reported how Steve Irwin quickly made YouTube’s most viewed list. On some levels it was impressive how YouTube’s vast audience started posting tribute and news related videos within a couple hours after the announcement of his tragic death. Less then 24 hours after his death videos related to Irwin became some of the most viewed, top rated, most discussed and most linked videos in YouTube’s collection. Even TechAddress’ post, “Steve Irwin Makes YouTube’s Most Viewed List” quickly rose to WordPress’ Top post list after reporting the YouTube fact. With more than 100 million videos viewed every day, an estimated 65,000 new videos uploaded daily and being estimated as the 17th most trafficked Web site on the Internet, the most viewed content on YouTube (and the Internet for that matter) can dramatically change in a flash.” [...]

[...] The movement towards clean data is also making traditional web metrics obsolete. For example, Mike Arrington of Techcrunch claimed that del.icio.us traffic stats went stagnant after the site was acquired by yahoo. However del.icio.us lets it’s users leverage web tools (such as browser scripts, feed readers, and bookmarklets) that don’t require folks to explicitly access the del.icio.us website. So Arrington was using traditional web metrics that were tracking pageviews and reach, and ignoring the various off-portal ways del.icio.us can be used. Evan Williams notes that the combination of new web technologies like ajax and rss are forcing the development new metrics are needed to calculate the health of various websites. Number of blog posts is a fair metric for a blogging site, while maybe the number of urls bookmarked would be fair for del.icio.us. Better estimates for youtube’s growth could be measured by the bandwidth they’re eating up (which is estimated to run them 1mil/month) or by the number of videos they serve. So as new web metrics are developed to quantify the health of sites that deal in data, these sites and companies might be better to quantify their value, and be able to survive. [...]
