Technorati scores $7.6m more funding

Blog search engine Technorati raised an additional $7.6 million in Series C funding in June from previous investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Mobius Venture Capital. The information has been picked up from a SEC document files by one of the investor’s limited partners. Notably, August Capital, a previous investor, did not participate in this round. This news comes just after news of rival Feedster’s recent funding.

People have had a close eye on the company recently. Traffic continues not to spike, some employees have left, and rumored acquisitions didn’t pan out. Given that the previous round was in 2004, the company had to be low on cash. Our assumption is that this round was done at a flat or down valuation. Technorati will not comment on corporate activities, so additional information will almost certainly not become available.

Am I the only one that thinks that the $14mil they got back in 2004 should have lasted a little longer?

I mean … what have they been spending their money on?

The phrase “Traffic continues not to spike” amuses me to no end. I can’t expalin why, but it’s just so well crafted. (No offense to Technorati–they’re a great team.)

Why does Technorati need a *third* round of funding? What is different since the last time they got funding? A lot more blogs, of course, which requires more computers to fuel the search engine, but didn’t they predict that in their last round?

Sorry, no answers here to any of those questions! ;)

I like Technorati. My site uses WordPress categories. The way I have it set up, Technorati sees my categories as tags. Why is this cool? Example: This .edu domain picked up a few of my blog posts, just because they are tag-indexed by Technorati, so now I have several .edu inlinks, which is great for my authority in the SE’s.

    I’m so tired of Technorati.

    - Disorganized search returns
    - Full of links to splogs
    - Half the time Technorati tells me that people have “linked to me” happens when I link to other things within my own blog.

…blog search sites are goners. Google, Yahoo, etc. all easily built their own simplistic blog searches… and that’s all the public wants.

can someone please explain to me how a WEBSITE can get so much money for funding, I seriously don’t understand how they remotely break even these websites, how can they get $7 million! even $100,000 sounds far too much. Can someone please explain how these sites make money all this money?

    Me too~~

Explain how Technorati makes money, Peter? I doubt anyone can do that :)

I still use technorati only because there are still so many folks on it and the serach engines still crawl it. The search function and sorting of information is dreadful - but apparently expensive.

Technorati is the best to find news on blogs.

Technorati is getting its money not for the blog tracking but for the work of Tantek Celik and his microformats metasearch engine. http://kitchen.technorati.com This is the start of the semantic web and microformats although simple when combined with Live Clipboard and other technolgoies like Simple Sharing Extensions makes the web more discoverable and intelligent.

Yahoo Local, Maps, Flickr, Upcoming.org and Tech all support Microformats. I predict Microsoft via Ray Ozzie’s work will also do so very soon in various Live Services. The only surprise I have is Technorati got more money instead of Yahoo buying them.

The microformat stuff is interesting but certainly not grounds for investment.

I’m with Landon…T’rati is very tiresome. I try a search on it every so often and the results are not remotely helpful. They are either old, in a foreign language or spam. And the design makes my eyes bleed with all the loud colors, obnoxious ads and horrible real estate usage.

The same story … those VCs have too much money and they dont understand the technology so they put their new eggs in the same old baskets …. instead of investing into risky projects lead by unknown people ..

How did they spend the money ?, I assume the management have big payrolls and ferraris ;-)
