[...] 1. Interoperability After the initial success of AIM and ICQ, several other chat services popped up. Services like Trillian, Gaim, Adium and Miranda developed hacks to communicate across the different protocols. After a period of “cat and mouse” where AOL fought interoperability by making small changes to AIM, cross-platform interoperability has become a standard feature in most new chat programs. Yahoo Messenger and Windows Live Messenger announced interoperability this summer. AOL now has an open development API and Google Talk runs on the open Jabber protocol.
[...] The news around the IM field is that MSN Messenger can work with Yahoo! Messenger. That’s all nice but for me, and I might be the only one, I don’t mind having multiple IM clients on my desktop, even if they eat up most of my resources. What would be nice though is if they killed all the advertisements in them and other useless links and features. I mean how many people click on the MSN dating link, Try Rhapsody Free link, MSN Today, AOL links and other links? [...]

Perhaps now I'll be able to talk to Y!IM people from Jabber through my WLM account. Perhaps not. I hope so. One thing though -- while this is unique interoperability, it is not the first interoperability. Awhile back AOL bought Mirabilis and their wonderful ICQ software. AIM and ICQ are not interoperable. Yes, they're the same company, but that still almost doubled their user base. Now if only one of the 'big 4' (Y!IM, AIM, WLM, ICQ) will federate with Jabber as well, THAT would be a story...
