[...] An interesting side note is that “Farecast seems determined to have an amiable relationship with airlines and it will be interesting to see if they succeed.” from techcrunch’s second coverage. Finally, the search results page is very clean and ajaxy which might have made this my new favorite travel website even without the cool technology. See the coverage.
What a waste of money and talent. Farecast provides common sense answers to simple questions and within very tight limits (2-8 days travel, from Seattle or Boston only, ...). Worse, its rules seem to follow what everybody knows: fares are cheapest 3-4 weeks before your flight. Around 2 weeks before a flight they start rising. So time to buy is between 2-3 weeks before your departure. Did this require 22 PhDs? Etzioni and his gang have fooled their VC partners, and done a great job at that!

Reid, advertising and supplier referral fees in the early going. New features that leverage the predictive technology down the road.

Scott, yeah, service was unavailable for a few minutes due to a nice spike from TechCrunch and others. (It's been a big day around here.) Hopefully you were able to get right back on.

[...] A new start-up today opened its doors with a public beta release. Farecast (developed by Oren Etzioni, the head of the University of Washington Computer Scenic Department’s Turing Center and with $8.5 million in venture capital) enables travellers to utilize more than 60 billion records of past airfare prices to help users forecast whether prices will rise or fall in the next week. Farecast plans to provide data across the U.S., though for now only provides information on flights departing from Boston and Seattle.
