I remember taking a look at Ning earlier.

I like the idea of sharing 'restaurant' and 'trail' reviews for example.
Unfortunately I just tried to check these and the pages where excruciatingly slow to load.

I am not sure how different their offering is from many other sites though.

Wow, Ning is really making some progress. Last fall I dismissed it as a "Hot-or-Not" factory because every app following the same model:

What's Cuter (http://cuteoverload.ning.com/)
Girl On Girl (http://girlongirl.ning.com/)

The examples you've identified really demonstrate how Ning applications are finally coming into their own. Ning is back on my radar. Good work!

At first I was frustrated by how limited Ning was with allowing non-coders to customize the app. But then I found that with a little imagination, a cloned app can turn into a great "toy" without digging into the code.

For instance I cloned the Dead Rapper app (http://deadrapper.ning.com) from a Nong app called This or That.

i think one of the most interesting things about the latest ning is their approach to being a provider of platforms for social networks. more and more social networks will be verticalized into categories of college, professional, music, general (myspace) and other verticals. if lucky they could be the provider to many services. i wonder if its customizable enough to make it worthwhile.

Mike:

Check this out: pubet.com. It's a local startup here at Boston that I came across recently. The reason I recommend them is their technology is very unique and cool, essentially turn PC to a website. This could potentially turn Internet distribution upside down.

I used it to share 200+ party pics last night instantly with friends. I don't think yahoo or flickr can do that fast.

There is an european startup "allpeers" supposed to do the same thing and generated quite a buzz, I was on their waiting list for a long time and never got invited. This pubet stuff will do the job, very promising.
