If you don’t know Hugh Macleaod and his daily cartoons on Gapingvoid, you aren’t in the cool crowd. His art is clever, insightful and always timely. It’s often strange. He also doesn’t mind pissing people off every once in a while.
Hugh joined the Gillmor Gang as a guest for an April podcast. We spoke about how Hugh might generate more attention for his work, and the idea of a blog widget came up. Well, two months later Hugh’s launched it. Want to show his daily cartoons on your blog or other website? Get the code here.

Gapingvoid has to be one of the funniest blogs on the web, but unlike some cartoons they actually say something, rather than just being a silly picture. Hugh Macloed is a legend.
I think I’ll pass on this one.
yawn.
best widget ever? -_-
BK – yeah, for me anyway. I love his cartoons.
if it’s the best widget ever, why isn’t it on this site? i guess the search widget is really the best widget ever.
all this “widget” talk is nonsense anyways. people have been including snippets of code on pages for years. nothing new.
Contemporary blog contains widgets, snippets and all that modern stuff. But can anyone tell where is blogging itself?
Yeah, really funny… *yawn* no wonder I’ve never heard of him.
Thanks for the kind words, Michael =)
Hugh Macloed is probably in the top 5% of internet funniness and he’s always on the edge with product distribution. This widget concept goes well with his creative commons licensed illustrations and cups and stuff with his prints. Good stuff.
I must be missing something here. I think I found maybe two of his cartoons funny. It might have to do with that fact that I couldn’t figure out whether some of the poeple were desks that had gotten caught in some sort of blender or people, or some mixture of both: http://www.gapi.../hewhowould.jpg
What a lame widget
It’s half way through 2006. Talk about a “widget” on a tech page, such as this, and people are going to expect to be able to download a Dashboard/Konfabulator widget.
And it’s also now a netvibes module !
you can find it on http://eco.netv...3695/gapingvoid
Do you think “widget” can be a buzzword with some weight in the next few months?
In doing a lil research for my own AdWidget conglomerate I did a Google Search & in NicheBot & Widgets don’t really show up on the Radar yet. So there’s still plenty of time to get in on the groundfloor!
Widgets might have been around for sometime but it’s only recently that Bloggers have started adopting them. & it’s going to take mass use but like AdSense it will have the power to create whole new Economy’s not yet even imagined!
Humour like gapingvoid is much welcomed & much needed in this crazyworld*
First let me give kudos to Hugh for doing something mostly unique in the blogosphere – creating HUGE traffic and interest.
But in general, I tend not to understand 90% of the cartoons he posts, and the 10% I do understand I just don’t find even mildly amusing. I follow the industry as much as anyone else… I just don’t get it.
That’s the great thing about the internet/blogosphere – not everything is for everyone!
He ain’t nothin’ compared to the original:

You can get a lot of mileage (both comic and financial) out of skewering the business world — look at Scott Adams’ Dilbert empire. Hugh can be funny when he plays in that pool.
Where he lost me was quite some time ago when he ran a multi-part series about being creative. It started out well, but then descended into a series of value judgements about people’s life choices and I checked out. Telling people that they are soulless drones because they’re not out there being creative all day is neither funny nor inspiring.
it’s not the one’s you don’t ‘get’ that matter – its the one’s that you do get that make it so worthwhile – the irrereverance towards the stuck up, stick in the mud, mindless status quo can be awesome
lemme guess: the commenters who wrote rude things about Hugh Macleod work for agencies or corporations.
I think his Hugh’s a freaking genius; consistently on top of the curve and ahead of the crowd.
B.L.
I heard the gilmor gang 2 months ago, thought he was interesting and added his feed to my reader. At first I really liked his drawings – hell I even tried to fogure out how to order his wine to support the guy. Then after a while they all started looking and sounding the same. At the end of the day only one in 10 were meaningfull to me so I unsubed.
