[...] NetVibes toughest challenges are starting now. They have enough traction (although the market is still big) to monetize it in some way and they will have to find the right way to do so. NetVibes will also have to become mainstream which implies dedicated marketing efforts and relevant distribution deals to reach uncovered audience. They certainly have some competition from VC backed start up like PageFlakes (although they got little traction up to now) but also from the Big Guys (Live.com, Google IG and Yahoo who is certainly cooking a substitute to MyYahoo) but the product and the category are compelling enough for a few players (although some have already disappeared ).
Well yes it looks as if it may be a marketing campaign formulated out of a missed domain payment hehe. If so that is a nice trick. 50 day down time? hrm.

I think the community space will stay small company based for some time in privacy issues and boredom with certian communities. I think that there is much room left here in this space.

[...] YouOS is another "Web desktop" application created by some smarties from MIT, Caltech and Stanford, but with a twist. It literally is an OS. Already developers have developed dozens of little plug-ins. These include Flickr and YouTube widgets, weather, Gmail, instant messaging and more. The competitors in this sector are too many to mention and some are folding, but I don't think we've seen the end of innovation in this space. Look for the stronger brands to get acquired.
In the next five years, everybody will have a personal blog and a personal start page. I think there will be three players Webwag.com (soon to be released), PagesFlakes and Netvibes (50% marketshare) and Google (30%), Live.com (10%) and MyYahoo (10%).
Fold disappears but they did not fight for a long time. Its death is more an internal decision than a market effect. The personal start pages race is just beginning.

[...] Some web 2.0 companies are currently going through reality-check… fold.com just folded, and many others are trying to figure out how to start making some money out of their services. Don’t believe me? Try searching for job descriptions at some of these companies… many I’ve seen are looking for marketing personnel for the particular mission of monetizing their products and services (I’ll be starting my own “hire me!” campaign soon). This certainly reminds me of the dot.bombs back in the 90’s. As you know a lot of what we use on the web is implicitly free, but whether it’s Web 1.0 or 2.0, someone still has to foot the bill. We’re talking web hosting, bandwidth charges, customer support, staff salaries, etc etc… [...]

[...] Well this morning I was checking the feed of TechCrunch and saw this post – Fold.com…Folds. Come to find out they just disappeared of the face of the earth. The reason for their disappearance is due to the fact that th market for start pages is pretty saturated.
Hey.... don't trash "defining failure"... now the founders can move on to something bigger and better. There's PLENTY of space for innovation left and too many players in a crowded area might not be a good thing.

Peter Cooper mentions the "Myspace crowd". One thing I've noticed about the teen crowd on the social networks is that they love their quizzes & surveys. Problem is, someone takes a quiz and wants their friends to do the same, they have to post a link to a different site. With Web 2.0/Ajax stuff it should be easy for one of these sites to have someone embed the quiz right on their site, have someone take it and automagically have the results appear on the friend's site. I think sites that do this will have an advantage - perhaps My AOL pages, with their "iamalpha" development?
