There are two things that must take the blame for the state of this world. Computers and mobile phones. What has it come to when we no longer communicate face to face and everything that is said is written in a text or an e-mail. Whatever happened to community spirit? Even when I grew up and I'm only 23, neighbours used to talk to each other, now they don't look each other in the eye. Social networking comes when you get out and meet people, not sitting in front of a computer waiting for that e-mail. Bebo is for the introverts not to mention it being a haven for stalkers and paedophiles.
So, what are you doing tonight? Will it be a thoughtful bottle of wine and then round to friends for a chat or another boring night of lonliness in front of tv or computer.
Think about it.

[...] Bebo has grown huge in the UK, I didn’t start watching the UK market until recently, but from what I can tell Michael has taken the company from 4 million daily pageviews to 60-75 million a day in the UK. The company has also recently taken funding to the tune of $15 million. I don’t really like the idea of taking VC money as it signals that you are most likely going to sell the company in the next 3 years. Given that Michael starts one company after the next I don’t think he cares to much… For a quick laugh take a look at alexa, suppidly 7 million pageviews a day Digg.com is 10 times bigger then 100 million pageviews a day bebo.com [...]

[...] In fact “London-based technology companies were the most successful in raising funding with Paris trailing in second place with approximately 5.4%, Stockholm is third followed by Dublin. (Note: Ireland have dropped behind in 2006 with only 9 deals recorded thus far) The top 10 is further made up by Cambridge, Amsterdam, Munich, Copenhagen, Berlin and Helsinki. Of course the recent NetVibes €12 million investment and Bebo deals will have changed the percentages but not the overall placings. [...]

[...] HitWise analyst Heather Hopkins attributed to Bebo jump to the launch of the site’s new music section. Hopkins reported that according to HitWise numbers, Bebo is now the 11th most visited site on the internet world wide. We reported last month that Bebo now has more than 25 million registered users and 3 billion monthly page views. Myspace, for comparison, has 70+ million users and nearly 30 billion monthly page views. The company raised $15 million in a round led by Benchmark Capital this May.
[...] What I really don’t get is the plan to build more social networking sites and add one tiny little feature as a differentiator. “Welcome to Bebo, we’re like MySpace with independent music and colleges links.” They must be doing well, as they turned down a $550 MILLION dollar acquisition offer after raising just under $20 million total. I will rarely say something like this, but I hope they end up with less than half their last offer at most. Way too greedy! I don’t care about the MySpace acquisition price, this is absolutely nothing more than a self-propagating bubble which will see a lucky few run away giggling with wads of cash, and a whole bunch of investors and acquirers wondering what the heck they did with their money (well, not their money, all those people whose pension plans have entrusted the funds with creating additional wealth, but thats just a pesky detail). [...]

I really dont' think AOl's new sns will kill what you call the little guys. 24 million users is hardly little. I personally thing AOL has nothing new or exciting to offer in this market.

We put the social networking feature into the Go BIG Network (http://www.goBIGnetwork.com) and applied it to how entrepreneurs (like the ones that I'm sure read TechCrunch) connect with each other.

It's been especially useful for people to find stuff like a Java programmer for a particular job or an angel investor for a startup. It's worked incredibly well.

When you start to break social newtorking down into particular interest groups that can use the functionality to improve communication and do more business, it becomes more interesting. In our case, applying it specifically to the startup ecosystem has proven to be real effective. I think along those lines you'll see quite a few startups pull out chunks of a social network and build a community around a particular focus.

There are a lot of regional Social Networking sites popping up. Friendster has a huge following in the Phillipines. I have not spent much time on bebo, but I keep hearing their name pop up. All i can say is....Good Luck.... Every article I read seems to pull a new player into the game. The reality is that only time will tell. I personally think AOL's new Social Networking site will kill a lot of these little guys.

This shows that VC money is not flowing into other more innovative concepts.
Bebo is just another effort to get many eyeballs and make money fast.

Are the next googles and skypes getting funded at all?
