The extremely popular, quasi-legal AllofMP3 site went down over the weekend and is not yet back up. The site currently says “We are sorry but the server is closed for maintainance.”
We’ve written about AllofMP3 a number of times, including a review of their iTunes-like client software and as part of a general review of downloadable music. AllofMP3 offers DRM-free downloadable music in a variety of different formats and quality levels, for $0.02 per MB, far below what legitimate music services charge.
The site has evolved from being a little known cult favororite service to a powerful force in music sales. In April 2006 it was second only to iTunes in U.K. online music sales.
Pressure on Moscow to close the site has been intense and is increasing. In recent comments, Russian President Putin stated that they would do more to fight copyright infringement in order to gain admission to the WTO.
I am a fan of AllOfMP3 because it puts pressure on labels to strip out DRM and keep online prices low. It’s disruptive to a broken business model. I hope it comes back online.

Hi all, there’s been a load of discussion re the “legality” of someone outside Russia using the allofmp3 site which seems to have died down now the site is back up yippee!
Here’s my question, I’m in the UK and love this site, I’ve spent more money on music on this site than I’ve done in music stores in years!
At the weekend there was a TV prog on “illegal” downloading looking at the £2500 fines handed out to those who used Napster in the early days.
“When” probably rather than “if” Russia closes this site down to get into WTO and it is deemed “illegal” for those outside Russia to have used the site (Beatles music etc..) what’s to stop USA E-mailing fines to everyone, allofmp3 have exact “track… sic” records of our activity, gulp!
@ Rodriguez
What encoding settings are you using?
Hmm, am I the only one with log-in problems in allTunes?
“Error at update user basket. Wrong response format!”
When I’m buying an album, it doesn’t start the downloading!! …
Steve, Is it illegal to buy a CD overseas and bring it into the States? If not I don’t think you have done anything illegal. I suppose you can’t say for certain until it’s been tested in court. Interesting though, why hasn’t RIAA taken anyone to court over it? (because they might lose?)
The people who got sued for using Napster and more recent peer to peer networks were those that made the music available for download. People actually doing the downloading have nothing to worry about, as long as you don’t also share out a large (100 tracks +?) amount of music. By the way, I downloaded 6 albums on Friday 19th in Mp3 192 format and they encoded quickly and downloaded without any problems. I don’t think it’s going to last too much longer so best make the most of it while it lasts…..
You know - it’s great and all that allofmp3 is back online. But I really wish there was a way to add funds to your account outside of giving them your CC directly!!
xross no longer takes payments and redirects users to cmpass.com. But cmpass.com says they’ve reached their daily limit for funds. It’s been giving this message since last wednesday. What gives??
Henrik,
i’m getting the same message.
“Error at update user basket. Wrong response format!”
please tell me someone has figured out what the problem is? Help!
Bill im getting the same error, anyone ?
If you check out the xrost website they state:
Currently, our service is being relocated to a new payment provider in order to improve security and performance. During the relocation you will be unable to order new PIN codes; you will still be able to see your previous orders.
Maybe xrost/cmpass has got caught up in the same server relocation issue as allof??
Hmm, struggling to get ordered songs downloaded today…
Anybody else got the same probs?
This “Error at update user basket. Wrong response format!” is really starting to piss me off - it makes no sense!
Anyone with a golden solution? …
Song don’t get encoded since a few hours.
Everytime that happend, they went down a few hours later. :/
they’re down again!
Yeah, they’re down again, but allTunes seems to be normal… Strange…
Hmmmm…. I just tried to purchase a pin code, but couldn’t get it. I don’t know, but I have the feelling that this time is for real. Thanks a lot, RIAA. >-(
Thanks God, it came back!!!:-)
This is crazy! I keep waiting for allofmp3 to close down for good, but it seems like with each new day, they’re only growing stronger. It’s been 18 days since the site came back up after a week of shut down, and since then; new albums have been added each day, downloads are quicker and my own personal request has even been added! (something yet to happen in recent memory). This leads me to wonder if all the hype is just that; hype. As of yesterday (june 4th), there were still news articles and blogs across the internet citing everything from Putin to WTO regulations to the RIAA as being “an immediate threat to aomp3″. This continues (and probably will) with nothing coming from the AOmp3 camp about a threat. In other words, AOmp3 either knows it’s in it’s last days and is trying to make a last minute cash in, or someone out there is lying. After almost 3 weeks with no problems and no word from the AOmp3 camp, the latter seems most likely. Here’s to hoping AOmp3 lives forever!
Allofmp3 seems to be down again after 3 weeks of trouble free service. Anyone know what is going on here?
That’s right, ordering is not working. I’ve sent them a message and they told me that “work of the site will be restored in the near future”. What is “the near future” is something that is still unclear…
I use ALLTUNES and when the basket tries to update I get a message similar to “Error at update user basket. Integer Overflow.”.
Any idea what this is? I reinstalled ALLTUNES and few times and get the same message however all this morning ALLTUNES worked reasonably well. However now and then I would get a message from the basket stating something along the lines as “incorrect number of songs” or etc.
Regards,
JoJoChimp
No albums in the just added bin for june 23rd. Look out guys, I think aomp3 is going back down again. Cash out today…just in case.
Why do Record Companies sell their cds cheaper in Far East Countries ? why do they charge so much for them here in Europe an USA ? is this not a Rip Off? Is it any wonder people download music Illegally, Maybe if the record companies,AND artists weren’t so greedy then we would all have a fairer system of listening AND PAYING for music Legally. As for me i’m using http://www.lavamus.com guys are great! i have no problems with my credit card also they are accepting paypal
Their servers seem to be working just fine these days and ALLTUNES rocks.
can’t get at my account…..when I try to login…flips to russian and quits….
Here it is October 14, 2006 and allofmp3 is better than ever! Faster downloads, an awesome new preview feature that blows their old way of doing it out of the water. Previews launch instantly within their own embedded flash player. I’ve been using them now for a year and a half with only minor problems (around the time many of the posts above were made). I certainly hope Putin doesn’t allow the WTO to blackmail them over one company (which according to news reports is exactly what they’re doing). Allofmp3 is giving a course on how an online music store should operate - and I don’t just mean the prices. They just do it RIGHT.
I wonder if ALLOFMP3 is getting ready to fold. Bush and Putin are trying to get Russia into the WTO by the end of October, 2006. ALLOFMP3 seems to be a stumbling block. In the last week, I noticed trouble downloading songs and, most tellingly, for the first time ALLOFMP3 has sold its users names to a (porn) spam site. I know this, because I used a dedicated email account for ALLOFMP3 (that is the only site I ever gave that email account too) and in the last week I have been flooded with (porn) spam on that email account. My bet is that ALLOFMP3 is shutting down in the near future.
After all the praise in my comment above (just four days ago), I now have to agree with Scott above. I just checked my email account which was for allofmp3 only and sure enough, spam free until October 4th - and then a swarm of porn spam. Also, in the news tonight, it looks like they’ll be leaving the scene after the Russian Parliament has adopted a preliminary law that would ban the operation of allofmp3 and pave the way for Russian entrance into the WTO. All I can say is ———– DAMN!
The ship is sinking.
I use allofmp3.com all the time and, in all honesty, I think it’s an awesome site! So far, the best part about AllOfMP3 is that, due to the fact it contains far more artists and albums than most other music sites, it has introduced me to some of the most interesting artists and music (from around the world) I’ve ever heard of–much of which I’ve NEVER heard of before!
Although I do feel sorry for the artists losing some money due to the cheap downloads, I think it’s time for all of today’s musicians to realize that music is ripped and shared for free several billion times per month worldwide. I think it’s also time that, with all-due respect to the musicians, if musicians care about making lots of money–especially those who are greedy, they should consider at least finding other jobs as well in addition to their music career. Look at some of the acting careers many musicians have, for example.
After all, this IS a changing world and, as for most other non-musicians these days, people are changing careers more and more often these days. Considering that, if I was a musician and/or someone that produced material that can easily be freely distributed and copied all over the world, I would consider holding at least one second profession in addition to music.
Bottom line is this–is it better to have a site like allofmp3.com continue running so that there is *some* money coming in, OR take the site down and risk all of it’s former users getting into the habit of file sharing–thus increasing the amount of file sharing substantially?

Allofmp3 is available worldwide where as other major online music stores such as iTunes, Napster, Rhapody are not available in all countries.
I think they should pay more attention in increasing their coverage rather than closing the Allofmp3.com
I found out about allofmp3 about two months ago. Since then, I have downloaded about $200.00 worth of misic. What a ride. It was only last week that I learned that the site simply copies cds to their server, without the artists permision. They then legitimize their sales policy by saying that it is consistent with Russian law. from what i have heard, no artist has ever received a nickle from allofmp3.
Even if it comes back online I shall stop using it. It seems at least highly unethical and at most theft that artists get no compensatioon for their work.
The allofmp3 deal did seam a little too good to be true. I have nothing against chaper music but I do think that we should be receiving it with the consent of the artist - no matter how wealthy the artist. Let’s face it, ethics are ethics, should we steal from the wealthy artist and the poor one alike because their intermediaties in the recording industry are giving the consumer a raw deal.
Looks like I will return to iTunes.
I just don’t see how the RIAA can justify its price tag. I mean 1.35T dollars???? Even if they win this case, will it ever stop? What reimbursements and entitled monies do they think they are justified with? Especially when everything is grouped together. The absolute GARBAGE they make KNOWINGLY to MAKE MONEY seems to make no difference to them. Its the bottom line they care about. The artists? Really??? I wonder what say they really have. I mean are these artists so relied on this industry that they couldn’t market their own music effectively and get proceeds given DIRECTLY to them? Or are they “tied in” and are happy enough with what they get that it makes no difference to them anyways.
Either way if you do the math, their 1.35T price tag would mean that they would get compensation of the full maximum fine amount for all of allofmp3.com’s users OR presumably that all of its users downloaded ~240,000 songs at iTunes price of $0.99 per song. Either way, there seems to be more money to be made suing and fining people than their is by what was originally intended, sales. To be honest as greedy as these pirates seem, and they are, how are these recording industry execs any better? I mean does anyone actually LISTEN to music nowadays? IT SUCKS!!!
I have read loads of stuff about this site being illegal and not paying royalties. But I have read on the BBC website that allofmp3 pays royalty monies to Roms the Russian Multimedia and Internet Society, Roms has tried to pays the western authorities but they refuse to recognise Roms and reject any offers of payment.
Who is in the wrong here? I don’t think it is Roms do you!
itunes is a rip off and artists need to quit crying like babys and take their music on the road and do a concert if they need to make money, who cares if their song is 10 cents maybe they have 1 good song on a album
I wonder if Clothyardshaft (132) will be deleting the $200 worth of songs he/she has purchased.
It’s Jan. 23rd and allofmp3.com hasn’t been updated in over 10 days. Is it down? Is something going on? Anyone know?
I’ve discovered site iomoio.com, which I guess is analog of allOfmp3.com. Their pricing strategy is like $0.15 per track no matter what size and bit rate it is.
When you register you get $0.30 deposited to your account as they say “to check out the quality of our services for free”.
Also they give 100% bonuses on deposits made by Credit Card starting from 20 USD (pay $20 get $40 added to your balance; $30 = $60 etc.).
Other rather eye-catching thing is their “Daily Bonus” scheme, they say; make a payment for e.g. $20 and get $0.02 added to your balance daily, make another payment of $30 and your bonus amount will increase to $0.05 daily.
Concerning legality of this site: The availability over the Internet of the Iomoio.com materials is authorized by the license # 33/3M-06 of the Rightholders Federation for Collective Copyright Management of Works Used Interactively (Russian Organization which they pay Royalties to).
Ok, their services might be legal for Russians, but is it legal to use their services in US, UK and other European countries? Actually yes it does mean they are legal in the US and UK, in that music you download is considered legally licensed for personal use, and you can’t legally be prevented from purchasing in this way.
This is because of the Berne convention as administered by the WIPO, and WTO requirements.
I quote “…any country that is a signatory of the convention is awarded the same rights in all other
Countries that are signatories to the Convention as they allow their own nationals, as well as any rights granted by the Convention”
The pigopolist record companies don’t like it because it cuts them out of the loop - the money paid for licenses goes directly to artists! Therefore they do a ‘Bush’ and lie through their teeth even in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary in the hope that you believe them and use their preferred overpriced and DRM crippled services.
Correct me if I’m wrong.
Hey, guys of little faith. I checked today, Sunday Eleven March 2007, and Allofmp3 was perfectly operative. I managed to place an order and download. Everything is O.K.
