AllofMP3 Down - For Good?
by Michael Arrington on May 15, 2006

The extremely popular, quasi-legal AllofMP3 site went down over the weekend and is not yet back up. The site currently says “We are sorry but the server is closed for maintainance.”

We’ve written about AllofMP3 a number of times, including a review of their iTunes-like client software and as part of a general review of downloadable music. AllofMP3 offers DRM-free downloadable music in a variety of different formats and quality levels, for $0.02 per MB, far below what legitimate music services charge.

The site has evolved from being a little known cult favororite service to a powerful force in music sales. In April 2006 it was second only to iTunes in U.K. online music sales.

Pressure on Moscow to close the site has been intense and is increasing. In recent comments, Russian President Putin stated that they would do more to fight copyright infringement in order to gain admission to the WTO.

I am a fan of AllOfMP3 because it puts pressure on labels to strip out DRM and keep online prices low. It’s disruptive to a broken business model. I hope it comes back online.

THE SITE IS BACK UP. It is not down. Works fine for me. Looks like they are back in business.

Chad - the site may be back online, but not back in business, because ordering is still not working!

@ michael - Could you ask your friend, how long all that will take?

I received to responses from Allofmp3 tech support.

1. “We have some technical problems with some servers. It will be fixed in a few days. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

2. “Please, don’t worry. There is not any risk that your money or personal data will be lost.”

I hear it was a quiet buy-out. Figures, Itunes thinks they have a corner of a market that is about to get spread like a whore on holiday.

@ Aswin Anand
Allof isn’t back in businees. The website is online but the content isn’t. I doubt if this is still a technical problem because it is the one thing that I would do to keep my customers waiting and, at the same time, prevent further prosecution.

I think we are witnessing a change in intellectual property. Im sad that allofmp3 got bought out and basically, sold us all up the river in turn but I also know…apple can suck my *ss. I bought into mp3sugar and paid 34.95 for forty albums. Lets give them time to suck to suck us off. Buy now, pay later.

Current message:

Ordering is temporarily not available.
The site is undergoing some technical restructuring.
We work hard to resume the service. We expect to put back all the functions shortly.
Please, accept our appologies for this ongoing disruption.

Definitely a good sign.
But somehow, I still can’t believe that they’re really coming back…

This is crap.

Allofmp3 is NOT comming back. They’re simply stalling for time until they figure out how the hell they’re going to return funds to their millions of users. The russian prez has basically stated that this 2 cents a mb s**t is no longer going to fly, and the entire country’s government isn’t about to exclude themselves from wto just so american’s can get cheap music. They can keep posting whatever the hell they want on their pages, but everyone knows the truth. Allofmp3 has been slowly dying since the beginning of 2006, and last friday s**t finally hit the fan.

R.I.P Allofmp3

(and those who don’t believe are setting themselves up for disappointment)

Although it hurts me to say this, I think john is right. I noticed things weren’t right in the days leading up to the weekend, and quickly decided to liquidate my funds asap. I’m luckier than most at the moment (some users have upwards of 50 dollars unused, I only have .12 cents), but that still won’t change life after allofmp3.com. this sux

Every day in the past they have managed to send out e-mails on the latest albums now in the library. How come they have not sent out an e-mail to let users know what is going on? I notice other Russian sites are still going Ok

All non-believers read this:

It gives me hope.

Been doing some research since my last post, and I’ve found more than one credible rumor that Allofmp3 has sold-out to a major online music distribution company under pressure from the us/russian government. Rumor has it that Allofmp3 will convert to a one pricing structure, upwards of about 89 cents per song, or 9 bucks an album. And yes, all music will be bundled with DRM to ensure that no copyright infringement takes place. My only question would be; will they use WMA or AAC? I know mp3 has never been bundled with DRM in the past, but who knows, this may be a turning point. Anyone else hear of this buy out rumor?

Where did you hear/see that?

The reason why Allofmp3 was doing so well was because it gave people what they wanted and people bought the music. They sold the music in multiple formats at a cheap price and people were willing to spend the money for it. The RIAA should take lessons from Allofmp3. The RIAA wants to charge 99 cents for a substandard format and people buy it. On top of that have limitations and DRM to boot. The RIAA could sell garbage and they know people would buy it. It’s sad to see Allofmp3 go offline cause of a ripoff organization like the RIAA.

Steve - I couldn’t have said it better myself. Stupid, people will continue to pay full mark up for cheap, low quality songs that have drm. Of course, these are probably the same people that truly believe 128kbps is ‘cd quality’ and therefore demands a 99 cent per song tab.

Jon B - I’ve also seen a couple of those rumors floating around in random forums just as mike was talking about. I wouldn’t pay those rumors any mind though. I doubt a company like Itunes would take on AOmp3 considering that Itunes has a larger market share and a more expansive music selection.

All people here acting like AllOfMP3 won’t come back.
But why would then the site still be accessable?

That wouldn’t make any sense.
I’m still one of the few how are fermly convinced that AOMP3 will come back!

it’s back !

But it always say to me “Unfortunately, the remainder at your balance doesn’t allow you to perform the order!”, though I got loads of money on my account!

Can other peepz order?

Yeah, allofmp3 is BACK. I’m downloading a song right now!!

Well, works now again for me too.
Waiting since 10 minutes now for 2 songs to be encoded.
I guess there’s a huge load at the moment on their servers.

Still not encoded.
Anyone has already tracks downloaded within this hour since it works again?

Yes, I’ve downloaded 4 tracks w/ 192kbps Lame mp3

Still not encoded.
I’m getting a little nervous…

Is able to download songs that were left in my basket. Though some songs are encoding even though they already have been encoded. Hopefully I can get them before there servers crap out again. It seems to downloading slower than usual. Probably due to people overloading there servers, getting all the songs they can before the inevitable happens.

I registered a new account and odered with the 0.20-$ bonus a song, but also not working for me - so the error has nothing to do with my account.
I cant really believe that it’s working for you guys without problems.

How long did it take for you to encode the songs?

Alltunes is working perfectly for me! And the one album I just downloaded, took pretty much the same time to encode and download as it always has. Seems that everything is working fine for me anyway. Only thing is that the catalogue hasn`t been updated for a few weeks, but hopefully that will happen in the next few days…

we should al be celebrating. at least for now, its all good…

strange, i cant yet get any audio previews to work in 30 sec snippets, or full albums. but i was able to download a track no problem (in wma 2-pass). i would highly suggest you try to use their alltunes prog, i think thats the most trouble-free for rapid encoding and download.

RECORDING INDUSTRY!! WAKE UP!! YES, WE ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR MUSIC !! AS LONG AS:

– the artist(s) get fair compensation for his/her work
– the download interface is simple and intelligent (see allofmp3)
– the quality is excellent and we can choose the format (see allofmp3)
– there is no DRM to prevent us from moving the file around as much as we want FOR OUR OWN USE only (see allofmp3)
– AND you adjust prices for the music you sell to pass on the truly ENORMOUS savings for your industry not having to record, duplicate, package, ship, distribute, store, and retail CDs (for price suggestions, see allofmp3)

otherwise, you are going the way of the horse and buggy. it is inevitable.

Greg, I AM using AllTunes!

You might want to tell allofmp3 what’s going on with your account.

Still not encoded.
Tried with another account with 20$-Bonus - also still not encoded…
When I tried yesterday to encode a very short track @ CBR it worked fine.
But when I try MP3 with preset it just won’t work. :(

I bought music and used the “allofmp3 explorer” and as usual my songs were right there waiting for me. Granted, it is downloading a little slower than usual, but its not too bad. I dont know why you are having problems. In the ordering menu it says the less popular formats may take days to encode but i think thats only refering to people who dont use the “explorer” to access thier downloads because i only use mp4 VBR encoding and it was still instantly there.

If you encode at 192 mp3 cbr or lower, you’ll get your songs encoded quickly. However, using anything above 192, or any other codec besides LAME MP3 will result in either no songs encoded, or one or two stubborn songs per record that simply won’t encode, no matter what. From a 15 song record, I’ve gotten 14 downloaded, but the 15 won’t encode, and I’ve been trying all day. Hopefully this problem will be fixed within the next 24 hours, cuz’ if not, im going to tunster.com…for good!

Figures… i finally stumble upon this site, get one album i really wanted, and am stuck TRYING to get another one i need….

Oh well, i guess that one LP i got was worth the money i paid :)

Looks like AllOfMP3.com is back in operations.

The songs are still not encoded.
I heard from other people that it’s not working for them too.
So I guess the fault isn’t on my side.

AllOfMP3 Assistance isn’t replying by the way…

I found out now, that the mistake is hidden in my settings:
If I chose MP3 + alt preset standard it doesn’t work.
But if I take MP3 + abr 192 it works (absolutely same price to alt preset standard).
But I hope they’re gonna fix it soon, because I want all songs in my collection to have the same quality.

Not true, sorry for the triple post, but I just found out that the thing that I said one post above was only at one track.
Other tracks arent getting encoded even with other settings.

I think if they don’t fix it within 2 days, I’ll look for an alternative.

O HAPPY HAPPY DAY!

Shes’s back again :-), although not quite herself :-(

Advice given on site is to order high bitrate tracks unless you are prepared to wait, and I also found the some tracks were not what the were labelled as (possibly as a result of the ongoing transfer?), so be a little careful if you need to dive in straight away. Some tracks failed to download (still queued?) I would also expect if they get a massive surge in users that this might stuff the system - so a little patience here may go a long way to avoiding problems.

I’ve downloaded some tracks this morning and although they transferred fine, they seem a tad “flat”, although the file size appeared to be correct. I may try another artist and/or another player, just to check that the encoding is as expected.

Anyway, KUDOS to the techs and I’m so pleased they made it back.

Looks like Allofmp3 is back up and they are adding music but with an exception. As everyone else is saying, they are having problems encoding there music. I had music in my basket that was already encoded but for some reason the music changed back to encoding. The music I had was at a high bit rate, so is hoping they get it fixed soon.

A few songs of an ordered album (256 abr mp3) did not encode for more than 24h too:

But the Tech suppport wrote back after I asked:

There’s some maintanance work going on at the moment. It will be complete in a few days. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

I got the following answer:

“There’s is a big encoding queue on the site. Download files as soon as they are encoded and other files will be encoded faster!
Accept our apologies for the inconveniences caused.”

I’ve only gotten 2 full LP’s downloaded since AOmp3 came back, but the quality seems to be just as good as before at 320kbps. I doubt there would be any problems with, considering that the encoder (LAME) is the same. My main concern is the stubborn encoding. I’ve been trying for close to 3 days to get one stupid song to encode to complete an LP. I’ve done everything!…and gotten nothing. This is really pissing me off…

Doesn’t support OE and thus not interesting for me.

It IS still working, I’ve been getting tons of music for the last two days with no problems.

Previously encoded music is still available for download. Newly ordered music might be encoded at normal rate or it might not this evening for my oggs. Maybe the ogg server is down. Maybe I should learn to keep my big mouth shut.
