Google Notebook Screen Shots

A Google employee named Erica Joy has posted a number of screen shots of Google Notebook, which will launch next week at google.com/notebook.

Notebook looks like it is designed to be a flat out del.icio.us competitor, allowing you to gather content from around the web, add metadata like categories and, if you like, publish the information. More from Philip Lenssen.

Certainly does. I really wonder how Google will be able to execute as it grows more and more diverse in its offerings. It´s still a young company and it is attemping to do some many things so quickly. Will wait on this release next week to test it.

  2. Hari Mailvaganam

Surprisingly (!!!) Google is a little late to this service - but this is welcomed if executed well.

del.icio.us is having problems scaling and is a tad slow and cumbersome.

  3. Jesse

    a blog post about it - http://www.ericabaker.com/2006.....poidh.html

  4. Patrick Fitzgerald

Hari is right - I love deli.cio.us but the search is painfully slow and it could use better browser integration. It’s also geared for the power user, so if Google can make a more user-friendly solution they might have a chance.

  5. James

Very cool! As usual, since I’m not in the inner circle I’ll have to wait to try this out.

  6. Serge

    anything about http://www.google.com/coop?

  7. Adam

I’ve been using del.icio.us for a while but if Google bring out something then I’d definitely switch! I want to see a FREE version of Flickr (run by Google). I know it’s coming.

  8. Russell Cole

I think Google is certainly moving at an appropriate pace with respect to its development and deployment of new applications. Although Google is most definitely diversifying in its various areas of research and development, it continues to integrate all of its applications under the auspices of the paradigm, the Ubiquitous Web. Consequently, the innovation of every new application has implications for both preexisting applications and the possibilities that are disclosed, allowing for new applications to be pursued. I simply wish that this research could be desktop-centric, integrating the user-data within the confines of the PC, so to avoid what will eventually become a treasure-trobe of information for Homeland Security, and I am sure that all of this data will soon be procured by Big Brother.

If it’s close to as good as delicious and any faster than delicious then I’m switching!. It seems to be 50-50 with Google’s new services though. Half are great, useful services that are among the best in their class, the other half are half-hearted efforts that only compete in the marketplace because they have the Google name.

    Thank You!
I didn’t know what it was….I just found it after I downloaded the “new” google desktop version with gadgets. Actually found it under the new gadgets and didn’t know what it was. In fact didn’t even realize it was a new thingy. It will store to my google account…cool. I found or noticed others will too.
    Sketch Pad
    Todo
Then I can go ahead and retrieve those from another computer. In fact all of my gadgets I prefer, and the settings to the desktop will be the same on any computer I login into. (I think? that is what it is saying. mainly only workon one computer but am going to install on my laptop to check it out.)

As always, you are the best sniffer

  12. RBA

#10 that’s what I call brand loyalty: I don’t question whether existing services cover or exceed my needs, I don’t even question whether a service launched by X company will meet or exceed what’s out there or whether it’d fit me better, the fact is, if X company launches it, I will definitely switch.

I mean, there’s nothing wrong with that really, but wow…

  13. Noah

del.icio.us is already integrated into Google as one of the plug-ins for Google Desktop (new version “with gadgets” is out now). Plus, it’s integrated into Firefox too.

I haven’t had any perf problems with del.icio.us, but agree that searching bookmarks would benefit from a bit of Google-hardware.

I might try Notebook, but only if it’s super-easy to import/load with my existing del.icio.us data…

  14. stavrosthewonderchicken

Judging by the first screenshot, it’s cursed by the same bleeding-eyeball UI hideosity that makes their rss-reader totally useless, it would seem.

    Ah well.

  15. anand kishore

I won’t be surprised if Google uses this human intelligence (categorization etc) into its search algorithm.

  16. Aditya Mukherjee

There doesn’t seem to be a way to subscribe to one’s own Notebook via RSS or JSON or anything else. This’ll be a major setback if Notebook has to compete with del.icio.us.

Del.icio.us offers so many ways of using the data outside itself, that not many people will switch over until Google brings its feed technology upto par, or atleast offer JSONP for their different services.

  17. Bryan Bartow

I agree with Aditya. If they don’t provide this data in some sort of feed they will have a rough time getting people to use it. I do like the small companion on the lower right of the browser. Sort of like GTalk module in GMail. It actually doesn’t bother me as much as I thought it would and, rather, I’m starting to warm up to it.

  18. Bryan Bartow

By the way, I like the new site layout. Did anything in particular prompt this Michael?

  19. Joe Anderson

On my blog, I’ve commented that is sounds like Clipmarks.

  20. Lelia Katherine Thomas

I’m not sure about competition with del.icio.us (and other bookmark tools), but I know I could see myself using this more proactively if, when a link is an email, there’ll be a small image (maybe like the external link image of Wikipedia) to quickly add the link to the Notebook. I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets plenty of emails but just need one link from the entire thing, and while it’s easy to add that to del.icio.us…it’d be even easier to just click and be done.

If things like that, things that integrate all of Google deeply, aren’t involved…meh, count me out personally.

  21. Lars Fischer

I think coop is the del.icio.us competitor. Notebook seems more like a replacement for tools like Backpack. In every case I’m very interested to check it out.

  22. Saul Weiner

One arbitrary point about Google Branding. They have now officially aligned GMail under the google brand by changing it’s name to Google Mail. Saw it in my account today when they rolled out Google Contact Pictures in Google Mail.

Even Google now get that consistency breeds brand awareness.

  23. Paul Michael Smith

I use gmail, googletalk and google calendar because they are good products, they are usable, generally offer the features I want and can be accessed from anywhere.

I have seen Del.icio.us but never used it. Notebook would great for snippets, etc. However I am worried I am getting too reliant and draw-in by the google machine.

  24. Bryan Bartow

Paul Michael, I have felt the same way. It’s odd, but I’m loving Google more and more as time goes by. The designer in me has always been put off by their almost-too-simplistic design, but I understand now why they have kept with it. Their stuff is easy to use and just generally works. That’s more than I can say for a lot of products from a lot of companies.

  25. gVeloper

I think it’s more of a competitor to Microsoft OneNote than to del.icio.us. Just my take on the screenshots thus far, or maybe my wishful thinking.

  26. Andre

If you are interested in content sharing with the ability to add metadata and built-in RSS support, you may want to check out http://listring.com

This product is open-source and more corporate (behind your firewall) friendly, allowing you to control where your data is stored. This is a big shortcoming to these public applciations.

Hosting your own server also addresses issues of scalability cited above.

  27. lotrel

I’ve been going through old pictures and I came across these breast bondage pics.

  28. Jim

I hope they google notebook has the same capability as furl and My web 2.0 to save whole pages.

  29. se7en

This looks very interesting, I plan on checking this one out myself. Lately I’ve been using Blinklist over Del.icio.us. I like that Blinklist allows you to set the importance of your tags.

  32. Cortland

Notebook definitely takes direct aim at del.icio.us. OneNote may also be in Notebook’s sites. I think Notebook will also raise the bar significantly enough that competitors may have to offer additional features/functions to keep up with Notebook (Yes, I think it could be THAT good). Easy importing/exporting and RSS feeds will be crucial to people adopting it (or, more specifically, switching from another service), but I sure can’t wait to try it next week.

Sooooo….what’s the point of this? What does it do???
    I see nothing of value…

  36. Renish Ladani

Even http://www.googlepages. can be used as Note Book

  37. John Anderson

Thanks for finding this. We started experimenting with our version of this - http://www.clipclip.org earlier this year, with some interesting traction from users.. especially (curiously) globally. Will be interesting to see what level of adoption G! can drive, just as part of their portfolio.

  38. Raymond Dubisky

I don’t believe that Google Notebook is in direct competition with del.icio.us and other bookmarking sites. It may have some side-competition, but it is not the only use for it, nor is it going to be the main use for it in my opinion.

I see it as a good replacement to jotting small notes down on a pad of paper, or to a text file when doing research and brainstorming.

It reminds me of a tool I use from time to time on my linux machine named BasKet.

  39. Sarah

    No importing feature yet?

  40. Neville Franks

I prefer to have my data where I can get my hands on it (and others can’t), so I use Surfulater http://www.surfulater.com

    With Surfulater I can:
    - Access ccontent without being connected to the Net.
    - Carry it around on a USB stick.
    - Annotate and edit content.
    - Link related content together.
    - Find text fast with full text search
    - Quickly and easily organize content.
    - Have the same record in as many folders as I want.
    - Access content as it is in XML.
    - Publish content (E-mail, Web coming soon)
    - Attach PDF, Word Docs, ZIP files etc. to content.
    - Use HTML Templates for record UI.
    - Captures content from any Windows app as well as the Web.
    - Import Bookmarks
    - Have many databases open at once.
    - Work quickly.

Note however that I’m the developer of Surfulater so I’m a little biased.
