Trendio is a stock market for news trends - sign up and get $10,000 in fake money to trade on words. Trendio monitors their usage from various news sources, and the price increases or decreases based on how often the word appears in those sources. There is also a French version of the site, here.
This reminds me of Alexadex, a site that allows people to trade on any domain name that is tracked by Alexa. I had some fun with Alexadex a couple of months ago and it is still getting some buzz from bloggers.

Ill have to check it out. Yay for french translations.
Interesting idea in terms of “Can I guess the next big thing?”, but it’s not a market as the prices are set externally, not by supply and demand within it.
An alternative could be a betting market on news with a fixed expiration date and value determined as already on Trendio, by frequency of mentions.
wow.. this is the absolutely the worst website I have seen appear on TC in the longest time. I went, and registered and I hope that the final version is far more along.
Andrew - I actually agree with you on that. I do have a reason for putting it up that will make sense in a week or two.
Michael,
You always make wonderful choices and have some of the best bits of reading that I have been able to find on the net. (Btw, I made the comment about myspace last week you agreed with & also sent you an email today at your editor@ email address. (Just pointing that out so you know how much I do follow your work and appreciate). Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing what good comes out of this. :p
Not gonna bite my linkbait play my game?
Nick, I fear your skillz way too much.
Really silly website. Just another pets.com.
Hi –
Thanks for the link. These prediction markets are exploding. The next cluster for these is June 7 in Chicago.

The bbc have been doing something similar for many years; celebdaq uses shares in celebrities, where the more press coverage a celebrity gets, the more their stock increases. They have one for sports stars too!

http://drunkmenworkhere.org has a game with same idea, created a year ago I think
The same idea indeed, Marc, “the first stock exchange on headline news!” Created in december 2004: http://mediamammon.drunkmenworkhere.org/about.php
Trendio uses Yahoo as well to calculate the current value, it says on it’s blog.
Will the folks of Trendio create an option market of high scores too?

Someone above pointed out the BBC pages… but there’s also the Hollywood Stock Exchange (hsx.com) and the Foresight Exchange, which has been around for years: http://www.ideafutures.com/
Pete Cashmore at Mashable reported on some similar “fake stock exchange” type sites a few weeks ago. The idea is nothing new.
The new Trendio was launched today!!
