I'm trying to find a subscription service compatible with iPod. Does anyone know if the files available thru Rhapsody/Napster/AOL/Virgin/etc... can be converted into AAC format or something otherwise compatible with iPod (possibly thru a converting program) or are they all encrypted???

I no longer have the car that had the music on, I haven't for almost a year.

I just noticed that you are charging me every month for music that I haven't received and couldn't.

Please discontinue charging me the $11.99 a month, and re emburse me if possible for the months you charged me. (9)

Thank you

It appears this is an old post, but still ranked pretty high on google if you're looking for the differences in subscriptions. I just discovered http://lala.com and I love the format...no commitment necessary!! 6 million song library too...and, you can upload your own songs. Want my take on it? I compared Rhapsody, Napster, Lala and the new MySpace music at http://rockangelmusic.wordpress.com

I am looking for a subscription service where I can get the songs on my iPod without having to purchase the music. I tried rhapsody then realized after I became a member that iPods were not compatible... I'm not that computer savvy so I'm not sure why it wouldn't be... I thought an MP3 was an MP3. If anyone knows of anywhere I can go PLEASE tell me. I'm frustrated and desperate.

Virgin Digital has now "partnered" with Napster.

That is to say they've been freakishly mind-melded thus inseparable and indiscernible from each other.

[...] Napster sells music subscriptions and the odd DRM’d download. Pay $10 per month and listen to any of the music in their library. This is a tricky, low margin business. There’s lots of price competition (see our comparison of the space here), and the labels and credit card companies take the vast majority of the revenue. In the last fiscal quarter, Napster had nearly $26 million in revenue but just $7 million of that didn’t go the labels and other costs of goods sold. Caving into this margin pressure, Virgin Music bailed out of the U.S. market just a few days ago. [...]

[...] I spoke with Yahoo Music GM David Goldberg and VP Product Development Ian Rogers last week about their views on the future of DRM, given Goldberg’s comments about DRM a year ago (see above). The forty minute podcast is up at TalkCrunch. While they don’t quite agree that DRM’s demise is inevitable, they do have valuable insights as music insiders as to what may happen in the short term. One interesting prediction that Goldberg made is that we might see DRM and DRM-free tracks being sold side by side, with DRM music sold at a discount. I think that the general availability of illegal and quasi-legal alternatives may not allow that market to develop, but we’ll see. They also predict the rise of music subscription services.

You've mentioned allofmp3.com in your review. Why you've missed other ROMS-licensed Russian online music stores like mp3sugar.com or mp3ninja.com, both have extensive music collections. The last one even provides lyrics.

[...] Music download and subscription service Napster announced that they’ve hired an investment bank to assist them with a sale of the company earlier today. This move was “in response to recent third party interest in establishing strategic partnerships or potentially acquiring the company.”At first glance the company looks very healthy, with annual revenue of over $100 million and another $100 million in cash. The problem, however, is that their business has extremely low margins. This last fiscal quarter the company lost nearly $10 million from operations (or $40 million annualized). Getting Napster to profitability isn’t going to happen in this very crowded music market. For more on Napster’s competitors, see our recent analyses of the music download services and music subscription services. Napster does not offer the best, or cheapest, product in either category.
