One note about the site and finding photos of the same person– if I click on the face of an identified person, say “Bobby”, it takes me to search results for “Bobby”. It would be better if that click took me to pictures of that Bobby, rather then all Bobbys.

Wow. That is pretty freaking impressive.

A friend, Grant, and I are now huge users. We just love the novelty of it all. And it really does help catalogue our photos better. Sure, it’s a little slow now, but it’s worth it. Completely addicted.

Yes.. but what they didn’t note was that it was *all* Scott Beale uploading his pictures from all the Techcrunch BBQs over the last few years.

Oh.. another thing.
50-70% of the early adopter market and photo market are on the Mac.
If they had only supported Apple out of the gate this would have been 6M photos.
Of course maybe that would have DoS’d them
In conclusion. They need to support Apple.

So I spend hours on end helping riya put boxes around people’s faces in my wedding photos for people that I probably already know …
What is exactly the point of riya once again? Someone please enlighten me …

The purpose of Riya? That’s easy. Create a digital trinket and sell it to someone who will overpay for the technology.
Secondary goal: structure the company so the employees get very little return, and Munjal fills his pockets.

Google seems to be buying a lot of flops lately - in addition to creating many of their own - like google base, which is about as useless of a system as I have found in recent years. Perhaps they’ll buy this too.

“chief blogger” Hahahaha.

I uploaded a lot of pictures, framed even more faces unframed beer bottles and other objects that riya mistook for faces. All in all I spent a huge amount of time (uploads were very slow). Now I am asking myself why? It only stores a 800×600 version of my pictures. Where is the benefit? I mean it would be nice if I could use it as an online storage but since it doesn’t I can’t see what all the hazzle of training the software is good for. No vale la pena.

It does seem to like pints of beer…
But I personally think the value will come when you can “Export My Tags to” Flickr or My Desktop.
From this you can then find all the full size photos on Flickr or your desktop with your granny in through one tag.

Kevin - yes I know… Mac mac mac … We are working on it. BTW we have found that the G4 processor is sooo sloow that Riya takes forever so you are going to need a G5 or you are going to need a brand new Intel dual-core Mac. The real goal of Riya is to help Intel sell more chips… just kidding…;-)

Mike at number 7 - I couldn’t agree more. What is the point of it? I “trained” it with one person who appears in literally scores of photos and still it keeps asking who she is…. Manually tagging with a name and an email address - why? I could do the same on Flickr couldn’t I? Deleting the pics from their service is fun too - uploaded over a thousand, realised the service didn’t work, and now have to go through manually deleting each picture… Very disappointed - maybe I am doing something wrong?

Zoto supports Mac, and has a Mac uploader. Posted from a PowerBook G4!

Ah, now finally some applications that requires state-of-the-art computer. Riya is basically another hardware-greedy computer game… still in Beta.

Riya is still in beta. Stop complaining that the facial recognition doesn’t work. Quite frankly, it does work, just not very well yet, hence it being in beta. Riya needs to be quick and license this technology to Myspace and Facebook. BIG $$ Can I get a sales position?

I have to agree with the above commenters, the fact that I’m forced to use FireFox is really annoying, since I’ve migrated to Shiira for most of my browsing.

eoino,
you are right. The real value will come with exporting tags. However riya isn’t capable of doing that right now. Still if it could do, wouldn’t it be somewhat more useful to have a programm running on my computer doing this? Imagine picasa could do it. I am really frustrated because I wasted a lot of time with riya. Honestly, my impression is that they are developing their software and not an web application. We are just dumb enough to help them improve their software by offering our time and computers. Very disappointed -

I still prefer FlickR. Riya has a long way to run.

I suppose Yahoo will buy Riya and Digg…

I wonder how many users 1MM photos represent? For instance, I pointed Riya at my ~1GB of photos (I have young kids) and came back the next day to test the service. So my total number of photos was a big number. Was I typical? I think the service is very cool, even with the error rate. But I think Riya is kind of like Zillow, very good first impression and time spent playing around on the site, but I’m not sure how often I’d go back.

I seriousloy think once the facial recognition gets excellent there is a real privacy concern here, in addition to the uploading woes.
Think about facial shots people are posting of themselves anonymously on, say, online dating sites. So might one be able to upload some stranger’s picture from a dating site onto Riya and have riya spit out the person’s name? Upon which I can go to Jigsaw and find out their personal information? And others can do this with MY image from a dating site?
Sounds like technology the INS and DoD might be interested in.
I really think a desktop app — or at least a desktop client that would allow to keep one’s pictures on your local machine, and the tagging thus PRIVATE, or at least optionally private - would make a lot more sense. Haven’t played with riya yet and don’t know if they allow you to keep your tags private/confidential and not shared, but that would be a prerequisite. Still, a desktop app/client would make a ton more sense.
Good technology, bad application.

It still seems a bit “me too” on the app side…

What’s the purpose? The purpose is to sell the technology and database of identified peoples face to law enforcement and face recognition software companies so they can identify more people in surveillance videos, etc.
With Photosharing sites if you are a user and you are uploading your pics and sharing them with your friends and they do the same, doesn’t everyone know who everyone is already for the most part anyway?
-
Nathan
This is quite upsetting:
http://www.riya.com/search?btn.....ext=bikini
Last year, we started a photo sharing platform in The Netherlands which allows people to privately store photos.
Last week, we launched the English version: http://www.famipix.com
No voyeurism, but private photo sharing at its best.

Ben says “stop complaining that the facial recognition doesn’t work yet”. Erm, isn’t that the whole point of the software?
-

Visual search technology is not a new concept, neither is tagging objects (in Riya’s case, faces). There are companies that have done extensive research and development in this area and have better products. A company that ranks among the best is eVision.
Check out
cheers

How does a company get that many uploads in 2 days?
What kind of marketing do you do to get that?
-

That is pretty freaking impressive

Hello Leena,
I’m also bit surprised about the news.
I’m also curious to know about the marketing strategy which they have used. -
