Streakr: “More Mad Max, less Tamagotchi”
by Michael Arrington on March 6, 2006

London based social-network-service Streakr is just a twinkle in its founder’s eye and could be months from launch, but they’ve got a fancy logo and they promise to deliver a product with attitude. I like that. Give them your email if you want to hear when they launch, or watch for a full profile here.

  • “As well as building a cool AJAX interface and including all the Web 2.0 features you’ve come to love, we’re also bringing a new twist to the standard social networking formula.”

If I see one more with boasting “Web 2.0 features”, I’m going to jump off a cliff.

Can we get some real meaning here??

  • “If I see one more with boasting “Web 2.0 features”, I’m going to jump off a cliff.

Can we get some real meaning here??”

Let’s see, if you give it some thought, that probably means:

    -RSS for everything
-AJAX loading of things like comments
-Tagging for images and videos posted, as well as perhaps for yourself and personality.
    -API’s for developers
    -and lots of UGC

Honestly, by giving creators of sites like Streakr phrases like “web 2.0 features,” marketers are actually cutting the developers a break. They can include whatever they want within the scope of web 2.0 without being worried about not meeting expectations.

  • Matt, I think companies are struggling with how to position themselves before launch. They want to show that the are in the know, but don’t want to appear lame by saying they are ajaxy, etc. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt until I see the actual product.

  • Mike, you are right, but I wish new companies would realize that, while appealing to Web 2.0 audience is important for attracting early adopters, most of these buzzwords mean nothing to the majority of web users. It’s just starting to become a cliche.

  • Oh Matt, it became a cliche a long, long time ago. :-)

  • Here’s a thought – rather than talking about the features (web 2.0, whatever), how about talking about the benefits to the users? 90% of these sites that are “web 2.0″ are cool features heavy, real uses lite.

I understand the potential is there for real day to day use, but in sports, “potential” is usually a dirty word.

The next killerapp has to be the one that helps us all migrate our data on a daily basis from site to site.

  • Michael, it appears as though you are reviewing buzzwords, not products.

Ability to execute is more important than ideas. Keep the vaporware of the radar.

  • morenmo is another social networking site at a similar level of development – http://www.morenmo.com

  • I’m with Peter. I wouldn’t personally use the term “Web 2.0 features”, but let’s not pretend we don’t know EXACTLY what they mean.

  • Is this a joke? What is the point of reviewing a site like this?

  • What’s the point? I’ve submitted my REAL company several times now and nada, yet this site makes it?

How about reviewing something that isn’t cliche web 2.0 unlaunched social network “missing the e” hunk of crap?

  • Whatever happened to Macromedia Flash as being the new Rich Internet Platform – it seems AJAX is now the new buzzword?

  • Jimmy… but do you know how to install a wordpress blog? Eh? Seems to be the only requirement for this one.

  • hehe… apparently Michael is having some issues with that himself. :)

And Michael, don’t get me wrong, I read your site everyday and definitely enjoy it. Theres nothing like it out there.

  • I also don’t understand why you feature a service that has only got a blog post but nothing else, not even screenshots or private beta or anything :)

  • Mike

I am curious on how you actually got to know about streakr and what they are actually offering at this moment that seem fit to be covered here.

All I can see is a blog with a single post , a really bad implementation of a landing page (taking email with actual verification of a proper email address or even if its blank)

    :)

  • Hehe itodd is totally right, they installed a word press blog lets give them a freaking medal. Myspace is lame so why is an AJAX version of that going to be any different? Well it’s not going to be, it’s going to be just as lame as the rest of them.

And as far as I’m aware a social network that claims to be “Mad max” really doesn’t sound that great to me, maybe its the apocalyptic anarchy that turns me off.

  • TechCrunch is soooo web2.0. lol

  • Mike, you may want to correct the link you have posted in this story. It includes a querystring parameter that takes you to the streakr blog, but with a message thanking the viewer for submitting their email address!

  • As near as I can tell, you advertised a site that is just logo and buzzwords and nothing more. Social networking, ajax, web2.0…. If that’s all it takes for a referal, I can have a series of startups built by morning.

  • Everyone can bite me. :-)

    Its MY blog.

  • Actually, it’s ours… you just write it.

    http://headrush.typepad.com/

  • That’s a very interesting way of looking at things actually.

Still, I’ve always written about very early companies and always will. People should get comfortable with that.

  • oh I almost forgot they didn’t complete the logo by adding the word Beta anywhere. What’s up with that? :)

  • That logo aint that great ;)

  • Streakr should be applauded for attempting to take on corporate giants myspace.
Lets hope they can pull it off and give us something fresh!

  • Well Mike, We know its your blog. But we are your readers, agree? What everyone is just curious with is the how your thought process is for selecting startups that you cover. There are tons of startups that are just like streakr, have not much to show, but you did obviously chose not to mention about them, so ehat put streakr apart from the rest is what I guess I am curious to know. And of course ,you have your rights not to answer to this since “Its your Blog”

  • Did anyone actually try and sign up for their email list? Every time I’ve tried the page just keeps loading and loading and loading and never stops.

I also applaud a compny that is prepared to compete with myspace. I am amazed that the general comments made are critical towards a company purely on a report of a launch. Let us all wait and see the product.

  • Yes let´s wait until they open their doors. ;)
