[...] Virtual Earth 3D...
They should make this faster. I wouldn't mind a little preload time for a smooth-scrolling ride. Vroom vroom!

Ryan mentioned this being a US-centric service. It's only a technology preview so that was kind of inevitable. In the Channel9 interview there is an acknowledgment of how non-trivial grabbing the images is aswell of a mention of how they might make a "add your own" community feature.

Funny - take the limitations and constraints of viewing the world from within an an automobile and apply them directly to an online application.

Why can I change my field of view in only 90 degree increments (surely they could have taken 360 degree pictures at regular intervals, allowing for a practically complete field of view)?

Why should I see an ugly and obscuring dashboard?

I see that there is a "walk" view that shows a cleaner user interface. It is now clear to me that Microsoft forces the automobile metaphor and ugly dashboard to help explain the very-confusing user interface.

Microsoft! Nice signs of life but clean up your act please.

[...] At first glance virtually driving or walking around San Francisco or Seattle doesn’t sound very appealing to me because I’m more for the real life experience. But it might be a nice tool for getting in depth driving directions. That way you have the possibility to memorize landmarks, which usually are not part of “traditional” driving directions tools. At second glance it stresses Microsoft’s growing eagerness to grab a large slice of the web 2.0 cake. In my opinion this new feature together will Microsoft’s other new web based services also shows that there are quite a few creative heads in Redmond who do their best to help Bill Gates take a look outside the desktop box. But I don’t quite agree with Michael Arrington’s when he titles his post abou this new service “Killer New Live.com Service: Street-Side“. It’s just taking another step along the maps/satellite path. Of course now the perspective has changed to street level but I think it’s not as innovative as for example the introduction of Google maps was. But that’s just my two cents.
Ian - I agree, a Doom-like interface would be cool. I'd also like to have lasers and blow stuff up as I move around the city. :-)
