[...] Relating to this above example, I think if the new social plays focus on specific niche markets, that user base’s requirements and pain points then they can definitely enjoy some level of success and can build on it further. MySpace is largely for the younger population and a related niche - trying to go after that same market might not be a good idea, I feel. Instead focus on the 25-40 yr olds in the tech industry and build something that brings them closer and create a community that makes them feel closer. Think of a way to deliver the experience of being at a TechCrunch party in the Valley or at reboot in copenhagen or at barcamp in Bangalore. I think we already have bits and pieces of this but that full community fabric is missing. Similarly, think building a community around doctors & physicians or sports enthusiasts. I think this can really be very interesting. [...]

Noticed the geek crowds don't do video right, so here's my tips (free of charge):

Have 3 or 4 cam's going for the main events, now don't EVER turn the camera's off, all master/master, so you can sync the audio and video later (Vegas a dream for this). Plug one to two cams into the main audio board, and have the others with shotguns for that warm ambience, plus have an mp3 recorder, just in case for tape switching purposes and later voice-overs.

Sort of broadcasting style switching, except in post-production where you will make better choices, plus makes editing that much easier, just a mark mark in preview, and then encode a final track. So live-style camera switching, only not Live. Doesn't work if you turn the cam's off and get outta sync. Events guys that don't use this method will pull hair out in editing. Snippets you use at end or middle filler. But the events are a continual stream. Comprendo? :)

Yes please do videos, please. Videopodfrogcast the entire thing, interview everyone, ask about the product plans and developments. Get it all on tape. And then encode up a nice DVD, sending some choice bits to HDNet Films or me. ;) In fact, do this for ALL your Web 2.0 parties.

Get someone with at least a 24P cam, no Channel 9-style low-light cams, no blogger crap podcast cams, no shaky cams, tho 2D3 SteadyMove v1.2 for Premiere 2 corrects that greatly, but I am all FCP, Vegas and Avid (mainly Vegas). And maybe have someone shoot in PAL, converting with ATLANTIS 2, for that warm film tone. Get a few real video guys to document it all.

[...] The Big in Japan team came up with a couple new ideas for podcasting: public and social podcasts. I created a public podcast for Shel Israel and Robert Scoble’s new book called "Naked Conversations Disucssion". You can listen to the podcast (so far I am the only person who has uploaded an mp3) by grabbing the feed here. You can add your own posts (assuming you sign up for a free account) by simply ‘adding a new show’ to the public podcast. The podcast already has 316 subscribers so anyone (i.e. you) can insert their message into the podcast and get immediate traction (i.e. listeners). Give is a shot and then let me know what you think. Brian will be interviewing Shel Israel at the TechCrunch Naked Conversations party for the podcast tomorrow (make sure you check it out). Here are the explainations: Public Podcasting: Anyone can join in (i.e. it is public) and add a show or episode to your public podcast. Pick a "long tail" topic or subject and let release your podcast into the wild and see what happens. Pick a "head of the tail" topic and watch it explode. Sort of like a public chat room. Public podcasts can be moderated, but why would you do that to yourself?Social podcasting: The concept is simple, it basically allows you to invite one or more people to join your podcasting effort. For example, had Lincoln and Douglas had access to our Social Podcasting service they could have each added shows or episodes for each of their speeches without the need to coordinate their activities. They would just upload their mp3 to PodServ and subscribers would receive each show or episode automatically. Or lets say you have a ten member book club located across the globe reading "long tail" books like Headhunting in the Solomon Islands. You can create a Social podcast for the club, inviting each member to upload their thoughts into the podcast. Each member would subscribe and by the end of the month (hopefully) everyone has read the book and listened to each others thoughts on it. Social podcasts can be either moderated or un-moderated.
We're looking forward to the party, the more people we get in there, the more warmth we can generate.

Since I won't be there, just have Robert and Shel scan in there autographs. I can then just print them and stick them in my copy of the book :)

[...] We’re about to leave Colorado’s ski country for Silicon Valley, where Michael Arrington is putting final preparations together for tonight’s massive Tech Crunch/Naked Conversations launch party. I have no idea how we’ll fit so many people into his house, but it should be fun either way! Unfortunately there’s a chance of rain tonight and it looks like it’ll be pretty cold (we have a tent and heaters, but it still will make tonight’s party very crowded — sorry we can’t let anyone else into the party, we’re WAY overbooked as it is). Just one last note about skiing. What a fantastic day yesterday. Blue skies and powder. Thank you so much to the teams from Copper Mountain Resort, Keystone, and the Colorado Ski Country (yes, they paid our way, so earned those links, but they didn’t do anything for us that they don’t do for other travel-oriented journalists and, anyway, they can’t fake a good experience). The room they put us up in is stunning. I’m looking over the mountain right now, sad that we have to leave. My friends have always said that Colorado has the best skiing and I’m now sold.
