Screen Shots of Gmail Chat

Most people do not yet have Gmail Chat built into Gmail yet (I don’t). However, Veronica NG sent me some screen shots from her account and I am pasting them below.

Two interface areas have been added at the bottom left (admin) and right (pop-up box for chat). The last image is just a blow up of the chat box in the second image.

Google is now blogging about the product.

And one more from an anonymous reader:

    woo hoo, first comment

ilike this idea about intregrated gtalk gmail, nice

  2. Michael Arrington

I like it too, although I do wonder about companies banning this like they do with meebo. This was brought up in a comment to the earlier post.

Wow, your right, Mike. I haven’t even thought about that. What if work related environments, schools, etc., were to block Gmail because of Instant Messaging. This could definitely turn into a big problem. I remember back in College, WebSense blocked just about anything!

But, I am wondering if you use a secured connection (https://gmail.com), these WebSense type companies can’t block it.

Donno. Guess we’ll see how it all plays out. Should be interesting.

This is very, very promising. I’m already extremely impressed by Gtalk’s easyeasy way of saving chat history into Gmail. Now, if they can finally put a “wow, I really want to use this” interface on a web chat, I might just be game.

This sort of came out of no-where this whole chat idea. Hopefully it will be useful - I dont see myself using it though. We will see…

The integration is certainly nice, but does not change the fact that by the time Gtalk came out, everyone had their Yahoo, AIM oe MSN accounts. For this thingie to really take off, it would have to be able to talk to ALL of those, a’la Trillian.

  7. Steven Frein

No big hoopla for us Mac users. Have the chat features in my gmail but don’t have gtalk.

Once again we are shut out of all the fun…….

Congratulations to Google on another product launch! Personally I gave up on IM a long time ago and won’t use this. Of course it sounds like Google implemented some interesting & useful features.

  9. MV

Hmmm, that’s neat. I would prefer to chat in other IMs though.

  10. CarLBanks

Awesome screenshots! The Google Talkabout blog mentioned it’s being rolled out on accounts starting today. So we should see it soon.

  11. Walt Hucks

I think this is neat, but I hope it is only “ON” when you enable it. There are times when I do not want to be bothered, and some people will still IM when you are “busy”. As far as competing with AIM, MSN, and YHOO, eventually, it will be like they are — you have to have accounts with at least two of the three, so you can reach your friends. Google Talk also has the advantage that it encourages outside Jabber clients on its service. The other guys just look the other way, but occasionally change protocols to break Trillian / GAIM and other third party clients.

Just a note if you don’t see Chat yet: if you giggle your settings you may see it. e.g. I switched language settings to UK English, then back to my default of US English - *then* I saw Chat. (hat tip Joe Lindsay)

  13. CarLBanks

    Giggling the settings did nothing.

  14. Brad Root

I had it… but now I don’t. Anyone have it disappear on their account, too?

  15. Mike

Well, I actually don’t like this and honestly I don’t get it! What’s the big deal here? If I want to talk to someone or IM with them I use Skype. Not sure why having it in Gmail makes me any more likely to want to use Google’s product. I think they have lost this battle.

  16. Niklas

I do care for the functionality, but I don’t like the ideas that Google sprout off. First, censorship is welcome. Now, privacy is thrown out.

  17. Paul-Serge

    I’ve got it since yesterday!
When I logged in to Gmail, there was a new screen to inform the integration of Gmail chat and with the question to store the chats (or not).

  18. Scott Persinger

I remember reading an article on CNET about 3 years ago suggesting that new email clients should combine IM clients. The idea has been obvious for at least that long. I think it’s ironic that Google gets to market first with a web-based implementation. Well, good for them. You think MS is firing up the Outlook team to integrate MSN Messenger?

  19. SchoolDistrictSysAdmin

I agree, technically it is “neato”.

But this action will get Gmail banned across many gov’t institutions unless they provide a way to specifically filter out/bann the chat feature.

  20. macewan

    anyone tried this on Linux?

  21. m0no

yes it works on linux just fine…..

  22. lily

it is nice to chat with friends having a gmail talk

  23. sneha

    hiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  24. Scott Adams

school district filtering software http://8e6.com has blocked gmail because of the chat integration

  25. jean

gmail chat can be blocked leaving users to just access gmail features

  26. Maverick Prowls

Setting my language options to English (US) gave me the chat options, though they wouldn’t stay when I reverted to English (UK), so I guess they’re only available for certain languages at the mo’. No matter though, I can put up with “color” and “favorite” for a while… Thanks to Richard MacManus (above)

  27. Helen, chat lover

I love to chat over gmail talk.

  28. jean

Hi, could anyone invite me into ‘google talk’ community? My e-mail is jeanlnospampls@3web.net minus the (nospampls).

    Many thanks in advance.

    hi

i love gmail chat and now my office netowrk has blocked it since yesterday! this sucks, i wonder if there is any way around it at all?

    please help, thanx

  30. Joe

    Hi,

I’ve had this Chat function for ages now and it’s very very usefull. Usually if I’m txting someone now I ask them if they’re near a computer after two or three txts and continue on gmail.
SCHOOLS: I’m in college and they’ve managed to disable just the “chat” feature of gmail during peak hours. I’m not sure how they’ve done it but it can be done!!

Go on the Google! The only company pushing new ideas in technology anymore!

    Joe

  31. melanie

this is to the comment(s) about blocking gmail because of the chat. I don’t know what program they use, but at my school, they were able to block just the chat feature and still allow us to use the rest of gmail. I personally don’t know what the point of blocking chat is, but maybe that’s just me….

  32. vineeth

they have blocked gmail chat window from working in my company but i am not complaining as we still have mail feature enabled.

  33. rashi

  34. Croixboy

My work has the chat feature blocked on GMail, but if I use https://www.gmail.com I can get it just fine! Thanks Brian for the tip!!!
