I originally wrote about Bunchball during the Web 2.0 conference last fall. They relaunched their product on February 1, 2006
The core technology is the same, but bunchball has changed their interface, focus and messaging. From their profile request:
We’re a place for users to come play multi-player Flash “games” with small groups of friends, or easily take them and put them into their own web pages and blogs, to play with their visitors.
This is the important new thing about Bunchball that we added after the Web 2.0 conference (along with a completely new, 100x better UI) - the ability to take any game and put it into a web page.
Games can be anything from arcade type games to chat, to photo and music sharing.
For developers, we provide quick deployment of existing games (minutes), and an API to our multi-player platform - giving them more opportunities to have their games be viral and the ability to create multiplayer games faster than ever before.
The focus is now on allowing people to easily create flash games, and syndicate them to the edge on blogs and websites. I’ve embedded a version of Asteroids below, which is playable on this site. Games can be multi-player, and chat is integrated. I hope bunchball doesn’t pull an “ajchat” on me and break down.
Bunchball was founded by Rajat Paharia and Sunil Singh and is based in silicon valley.

That’s awesome!
Yeah, I agree. It hasn’t broken yet, and I’m finding the chat to be the most interesting part of it.
Ok, that’s cool!
very cool. Nice integrated chat as a bonus!
Wow! Amazing stuff!
Yeah, they’ve really created something amazing. And it hasn’t broken yet.
Very cool. I was able to play the game within the netvibes feed reader.
Thanks for the write-up Michael! A couple of random things I thought I’d mention:
1. I sure hope it doesn’t break!
2. SHIFT will get you into Hyperspace in Asteroids, but there’s no telling where you’ll come back.
3. Emoticons for chat described here in case you want to get creative: http://www.bunchball.com/help/chat.html
4. I posted what we think are the big ideas behind bunchball here: http://www.bunchball.com/blog/ - check them out and tell us what you think.
5. Linked off the side of the blog you can also see samples of several games embedded in web pages. For those people who think the chat is the most interesting part, you might find some of the chat oriented games (Talk Amongst Yourselves, Question of the Day, Just Chat) interesting to check out.

Man, I’m putting Tetris onto my site.
Awesome… Gd choice of games… I will give it a whirl on my blog

Hey - a couple of other things:
[A] I’d like to amend my previous answer to #1 and say that although I’m not a deeply-religious man, I am fervently praying that our servers hold up.
[B] Because we’re slowly ramping up our service, we are currently limiting our total number of users to 5000. As we work through the scalability issues, we’ll be bringing more servers online and increasing our number of users over the coming weeks. We’ll post the latest info to our blog.
[C] Since being “TechCrunched” we’ve actually changed our server configuration and modified the clients - so if you’re a return visitor and having problems, try clearing your cache and reloading the page.
phew, - rajat
Works fine in NewsAlloy too.
“The focus is now on allowing people to easily create flash games, and syndicate them to the edge on blogs and websites.”
My recommendation is that they go license a lot of content and focus on the syndication part of the business first. Fast. I think this could be big.
i will say this to anyone reading techcrunch has its benefits its qiute fun to play astoroids
Hey - thanks to the free load-testing
we discovered some code in the chat client that was killing performance everywhere. We’ve taken chat offline for now, so that games will continue to work, and we’re working on a fix. And ordering a bigger server.
- rajat
Perfect!

Of the big ideas, this is the biggest. Every other gaming site makes you go to them. We make it easy to take any game deployed on our platform and put it into your own web page, whether it’s a blog, a page at MySpace or Piczo or Xanga, or a custom website.

I think the chat feature is a pretty nice idea but the above is pretty much BS.
There are already HUNDREDS of arcade game sites offering the feature of embedding games in Myspace etc.
Just take a look at a random sample of Myspace profiles and you can see this feature has been existence for months.
I haven’t played Asteroids since it was actually a new game…like 25 years (or more) ago.
Web 2.0 and Asteriods…interesting world we live in! lol
AV
Lol!
No offence, I think TechCrunch is great. Thanks to this site, I’ve found tools, like coComment and Netvibes, which I use every day. You’re tapping technology at the very root, but this isn’t technology. Who the fuck in the World Wide Web 2.0 want to *embed* a *flash* game into their blog? Those words spell lame to me.
If I want to play a game, I’ll take the time to run A GAME. If I’m doing somthing productive, like reading your blog, the last thing I’d want is to be distrupted by a game (especially Asteroid.)
Really, what type of loosers are entertained by lame flash games?
Jeru545 - You’ve always been able to put Flash games into a page, there’s nothing special about that.
But they’ve been isolated, stand-alone apps that don’t have any connection to other games or a memory. Michael created a new “instance” of Asteroids that was uniquely his and put it into TechCrunch. The high scores here are different from anyone elses. If he grabbed the code from one of the many sites you’re talking about, he wouldn’t have that.
He could also put the same instance of Asteroids into CrunchNotes, and then it wouldn’t matter where people play from, they’d still be competing with one another. And they can chat with each other across sites also.
We use “game” pretty loosely. Check out some of the other apps on the platform. Have you seen a photo slideshow or a music player that actually lets visitors add their own tracks right from the page anywhere else? Games like Tic Tac Toe and Hexxagon where you can actually play against visitors to your page? I think that’s the other key thing that we add - these games and apps are now interactive. It’s not just passive viewing (and maybe commenting) on someone’s page, you’re adding photos, music, messages to the crossfader, competing for high scores, chatting about today’s topic and playing a head-to-head game.
We think that’s really special. - rajat
Actually, I think Duncan at Suttree uses some good terminology. There’s games, which you can get at lots of different sites, and then there’s distributed social games, which you can get at Bunchball.
And for developers, we provide the distributed social part, so they can concentrate on creating great user experiences. - rajat
argh. that’ll teach me to try to do HTML late at night. Didn’t mean all that to be bold.
1. New, beefier, database server: CHECK
2. Leaks and Waves dealt with: CHECK
3. Chat turned back on: CHECK
Michael - sorry we broke on you.
- rajat

Thanks for articel. It`s not hard at all.
u can add any of the games from the http://www.idiotbrain.com flash arcade to your site or blog by just coping the code.
THis is a great offering from - bunch ball - very slick. also worth looking at is http://www.blemeshack.com
blemeshack is a web 2.0 offering with some substantial AJAX use inside the sign-up part of the product (i.e the Shack, and managing the Shack).
The whole concept of The bleme Shack - is a place to store all of the great clippings of code you find anywhere on the web. To games like this one, to videos (e.g. from You Tube or somewhere like that), or just to personal pics and other uploaded stuff).
They have a button for the Google toolbar to let you “clip” the code and instantly pop it in your shack from any website.
Any questions drop me a line,
Steve

Here’s a multiplayer word game written entirely in ajax, called Acrowars. You can easily embed this game in your website. Find it at http://www.acrowars.com
STEVE (and anyone else interested in blemeshack),
You said to “drop [you] a line” concerning Blemeshack. I’m all over the web
trying to contact anyone that has anything to do with Blemeshack. See, i’ve happily used it for months now (including the Google toolbar button), when yesterday, upon finding a text clipping on the Web, i couldn’t access my “shack”- it said that my email adrress wasn’t a registered user; there’s no account with that email. And just like that, all of my stuff is gone. Mysteriously, there’s no way possible to even contact anyone about it. But you can however, still sign up for a shack- meaning obviously it’s still running. Extremely frustrating. Thanks for your time, im hoping for a responding email.
Oh, yeah. This is well cool. Simple, yet addictive flash games - takes me back to my Commodore 64 years when I was younger.
hey is there any way of getting the “Maddness combat” game embeded on you’re myspace please?
