barrier of entry is very easy now. It just take 2 days of coding to create 50% of digg at <a href="http://www.opida.com" rel="nofollow">www.opida.com</a>

just build it instead of buying it. :0

I feel that digg, is worth the 30 mil.
I have heard person after person saying that they now go to digg.com for their tech news instead of going to Cnet.com or CNN( That also includes me). I mean come on,
maybe im just baised because, Kevin Rose is my hero >:

[...] Yesterday, I saw a couple digg stories reporting rumors about Yahoo! acquiring digg - I posted a small comment on digg dispelling the rumors and thought that was the end of it. Then, I woke up this morning to see TechCrunch (great site btw), CNN, CNET, and a few others fueling the rumors. So, just to set things straight - we are not in talks with Yahoo. We are focused on creating new features and expanding digg into new areas beyond tech. The recent reports about digg and Yahoo! are just rumors, nothing more. [...]

digg isn't proprietary or original. but somehow they gained critical mass, and you can either build something and hope to achieve that yourself, or buy it like yahoo's been doing. I and many others could build better digg-like sites, but can we amass the userbase? somehow, despite the maturity of the userbase being at the level of a 14-year-old, digg got bigg. I don't think digg is worth $30m, not even $1m, but I don't think the acquisition would be unfair or irrational. these guys put digg together, made it cool, got lucky, and now they may be cashing out big time, love 'em or hate 'em, but put the sour grapes aside. notice that most of the web 2.0 services that got bought up weren't anything particularly special or proprietary - but if you agonize over coming up with "the next big thing", you'll come up with nothing. think of something cool, whether or not it's been done, and build it for the pure joy of building it, and make it as cool as you can.

[...] There have been a lot of rumors circling the web about Yahoo purchasing Digg (the j. botter weblog, TechCrunch, Yahoo Search Engine News). This rumor has been put down (at least for the time being) by Kevin at Digg Blog: So, just to set things straight - we are not in talks with Yahoo. We are focused on creating new features and expanding digg into new areas beyond tech. The recent reports about digg and Yahoo! are just rumors, nothing more. [...]

There is a HUUGE rumour that Digg, the blog that anyone can submit to, is going to be taken over by Yahoo. The price was rumoured to be around $ (Clean your eyes again) 30 Million. That is right, 30 Million in Pure American dollars. This was followed intensively by TechCrunch, CNN, CNET and half the technology and Web 2.0 Blogosphere.
Kevin says: "...we are focused on features, not selling the company."

This tells us that their focus in on features, which is good, but this does not say that they would turn down any offers to buy the company. Just because something isn't your focus doesn't mean it's something you won't do.

According to an article on Business 2.0, based on recent high-profile web content deals, the value of a unique monthly website visitor currently hovers around $38 (the average purchase price per unique user of acquisitions during the past year). So if Digg is ever acquired, I will not be surprised by a deal over $30 million. Collective intelligence does make sense to me with promising upcomers like www.reddit.com, www.rrove.com, www.tagzania.com. Go Digg!

[...] UPDATE: Kevin Rose has made an official entry into the DiggBlog at diggtheblog.blogspot.com Yesterday, I saw a couple digg stories reporting rumors about Yahoo! acquiring digg - I posted a small comment on digg dispelling the rumors and thought that was the end of it. [...]

[...] More and more rumours are circulating about Digg being snapped up by the Web 2.0 harvester that is Yahoo. $30m is the figure circulating and my point of view is there is no smoke without fire. Both the Search Engine Journal and Techcrunch have posted on this along with countless others recently and I, for one, am keen to see this happen. I posted more on this subject over two weeks ago and have touched on the benefits in another post. According to Kevin Burton’s blog, it’s not a matter of if but when and the announcement could be as soon as next week! // Used for showing and hiding user information in the comment form function ShowUtils() { document.getElementById("authorinfo").style.display = ""; document.getElementById("showinfo").style.display = "none"; document.getElementById("hideinfo").style.display = ""; } function HideUtils() { document.getElementById("authorinfo").style.display = "none"; document.getElementById("showinfo").style.display = ""; document.getElementById("hideinfo").style.display = "none"; } [...]

I highly doubt 30 million is accurate - everyone in the blogosphere claimed 30 million for Delicious, but it was actually in the mid teens.

[...] Today, the traffic is poised to double that, and it’s not because of Digg. The Digg story was demoted from the front page; I’m still recieving traffic from other people linking to the Digg story, but most of my visitors today have come from other blogs that have picked up the story and linked back. The two sites sending the most traffic my way today have been Memeorandum (where it’s the top story at the moment) and TechCrunch, where Mike linked to the post. There’s also a lot coming from Wordpress.com Dashboards due to this site being ranked in the top three blogs on Wordpress.com and being the fastest-growing Wordpress.com blog, as well. The moral of the story? Don’t ever doubt the effect Digg can have on your blog. I shudder to think how much that Digg link would have cost me if I were paying for bandwidth. Thanks, Wordpress! [...]

Yahoo! is very smart. Digg is much larger (in terms of usage) than Flickr was at the time of the Flickr purchase, and it is fair to call that a successful acquisition. Different type of users, but still...

And as other people have rightfully mentioned, Y! is very sensitive to competition in the social browsing/search sphere, which is where it currently stands above the crowd (and Google). This would remove a massive arrow from someone else's quiver.
