Bluepulse called “Meebo for your phone”

People are calling Australia-based BluePulse the “meebo of cell phones” and they may be right - although it is also a platform that allows developers to build phone access to just about any internet application as well.

The engine behind Bluepulse is platform and tool set they have created called the OADP which claims to “allows developers to develop mobile applications without having to worry about supporting the hundreds of different devices available on the market, connectivity issues, distribution and billing.”

The test applications they’ve built on the platform are pretty compelling. The headliner is access to ICQ, MSN and Yahoo instant messaging applications. They also have an application to access tv and movie guides.

Oliver Starr at MobileCrunch has tested the software and says “Bluepulse will be one of the first category dominant players in mobile 2.0″. Also see the comments to that post, where a founder of Bluepulse explains their revenue model and other aspects of the business.

    Decoupling mobile applications and services from carriers would be a great step forward for the mobile Internet. Looking forward to have Bluepulse and OADP on my Treo.

    Unfortunately, I just tried with my treo 600 (Cingular). I followed the wizard, it did recognized my treo 600. However, when selecting “Start download and install” I get “Download Error: The file type you are attempting to download is not supported on your device”.
    I hope it is just me.

    Hi Jeremy,

    Thanks for trying it out (or trying to try it out!) The problem you’re having is most likely related to Cingular blocking you downloading that file type on your phone (hard to say for certain, as I think you may be our first Cingular customer!)

    Try this: tonight we’re going live with a new version of http://www.bluepulse.com. Once it’s live, get on your PC/Mac, download the .jar file from http://www.bluepulse.com/w and then select ‘other’ in the list of phones.

    Then you’ll need to get that .jar file onto your handset. If you’re lucky enough to have Bluetooth, do it that way, or connect up via cable. and save it in whatever directory the phone uses for its applications (games, etc.)

    If you have a Treo, you don’t really need this, do you? I see this more as a service for the non-smart phones - I’m already running pretty much anything I need on my 650…

    I agree with Ashish.

    I have the new Cingular 2125 running Windows Mobile 5.0 and all of this stuff is already included as standard apps. No need to download some other app to do the same thing. Am i missing something here? My phone already has AIM, MSN messenger and so on already loaded into it.

    Bluepulse seems like it’s aimed towards phones without any Smart features. Correct?

    @Ashish, @Fortino,

    Agree, my comment was mostly targeted to “regular” phones.

    However, I think carriers do still make [smart] phone users’ life harder. For example:
    - Verizon blocked some of the treo 700w bluetooth functionalities: http://nwc.mobilepipeline.com/175803792
    - Aparently (from Alan assumption) Cingular prevents me to download certain file types.

    But I agree, if you have a smart phone, you may have most of what you need or want. (I am still looking for a Mobile Phone with WiFi and Skype though)

    This was one of the worst sites I have seen in recent times. I could not get through the registration process even after like 10 attempts. Not sure if it a browser issues (using Safari) but completely disappointing.
