A very good post, succintly summarising the key points. I'd agree with the point about incomplete features - the recent Blogger version is testament to this. They didn't have a fully functioning product with all the 'drag and drop' widgets until right at the last moment. I think on reflection Google could have done more development behind closed doors before releasing the new Blogger to the public.

[...] We get a lot of submissions for beta sites to showcase their use of ajax. Michael has written a great post that should be required reading for anyone before they click “send” on that press release email. He stressed that you often only get one chance with the early adopters, so if you blow it you may not have another shot. [...]

[...] So far we’ve followed the advice well by considering our audience and not relying on anyone else’s APIs that could break or change. However, if some other ad networks out there did provide APIs for allowing users to access their reporting data however they wanted, we’d be able to do some cool things. The post on the beta tag is also interesting and we should start to consider whether we bother with a “beta” label or not even when we’re publicly available. For more on betas for new web applications, check out Mike Arrington’s post at TechCrunch.
I really agree with the first impression thing. For myself, once I experience a badly designed site, I will never be back to check whether it's improved or not. This is the issue we should remember, never publish the site with a lot of bugs.

I couldn't agree with you more on the landing page issue. Which is why I suggest making a landing page viral; begin the word of mouth early on by actually offering something to your potential users on your landing page. If it's cool/fun/interesting, and has something to do with what you're going to offer, they'll talk about it.

Hope this helps someone: <a href="http://www.agroupapart.com/2006/02/23/web-application-viral-landing-pages/" rel="nofollow">On Building A Viral Landing Page</a>

[...] Landing pages are important, especially for a web application that is yet to be released. We know, we’ve had a few. From TechCrunch article, Don’t Blow Your Beta: I personally like landing pages because it gives me something to point to when writing about a pre-release product. But many users don’t like them. A common complaint from people is that they sign up on a landing page and don’t hear anything for months (so they forget all about it). Another complaint is that the landing page doesn’t give clear information on what the product will do. [...]
