Social Porn - It Had to Happen Eventually

I’m not particularly condoning this site. However, pornography and gambling make up a significant percentage of Internet commerce, and it was only a matter of time before someone created a Digg-like site for porn. Well, that’s exactly what Socialporn is - a pornography site with web 2.0 features such as user submission, voting and RSS feeds.

This is not work-safe and will probably offend you. There is no pornography actually hosted on the site, however.

    On the one hand im glad that a site like this is featured on digg it brings variety but at the same time lately im pretty confused as to what makes a company a web 2.0 company ?

    perhaps somebody can enlighten me on.

    micheal: In my opinion (and I think that Michael will agree with me), the core element of Web 2.0 application resides in the social aspect (user created content and user interaction) and a sence of new technologies (like Ajax for example). For example:

    - transition from staic personal homepages to blogs by that allowing interaction between content creators and their audience (not necesarilly AJAX augmented)
    - bloglines which from the technical implementation might be considered 1.0 (frames and classic stuff) but due to its powerfull social aspect is obviosuly a web 2.0 product.

    Returning to the post’s topic…I am dying laughing but you have to apreciate the creativity :)) Excellent…I wonder what took them so long

    I have to disagree, all the technology that we have now would still have evolved without porn even existing. Was Web 2.0 driven by the porn industry, the last time I checked, no.
    However, one can argue that it could play a role in determining Video Formats , for example VHS was chosen over BetaMax because it was cheaper.

    I hate to say it, I have been a fan of techcrunch for awhile now. But between dpolls and socialporn on the main page, it is turning into a joke. I sincerely hope that this trend does not continue.

    micheal alot of the companies you profile tend to be american . Not sure if there are any non american startups outthere but you might want to see if there are any to write about.

    Love or hate the content, sites like these are disruptive: they break the normal porn revenue model of having to click affiliate ads, suffer through popups, etc.

    Oh c’mon guys, lighten up. Porn brought us the VCR so it’s not all bad. The internet porn industry is what brings us innovative advertising models which eventually spread down to non adult sites, so look before you leap.

    Techcrunch profiles new technology companies, and Socialporn is just that. Michael is democratic and I applaud him for profiling a new company that may be just a little beyond mainstream. You rock man.

    “XX Wanks” instead of “diggs” is kinda clever I think.

    But it appears to be all hetero porn *sigh*.

    Now in addition to dealing with people recommending apps that are Windows-only without mentioning that they’re Windows-only, I have to deal with my favorite bloggers recommending porn sites that are hetero-only without mentioning that they’re hetero-only. This is progress? :-)

    Michael M. - Great point on the windows apps. I do try to point that out but often forget. Regarding the gay porn issue, I just don’t want to go down that path. :-) But I will say a quick look at the FAQs certainly didn’t prohibit any sort of porn type.

    Agree 100% with #7. Add in there the “I finally got ‘you send i’t to work” post — I’m all for companies putting “beta” on their product to rush it out but come on. How does ‘finally get it to work’ get you on the front page?

    Some sort of sidebar that listed new companies would be helpful and save the main page for truely new and exciting web 2.0 stuff.

    I am convinced that a lot of technical progress on the Internet has been pushed or at least accelerated by the porn industry. I’m thinking about online payments, streaming video etc.. So I think the mentioned theory (in German) might be very true. Although it sounds a lot like a Sigmund Freud (everthing is sex-related) theory ;-)

    I really don’t see what the big deal is. Social Porn just seems to be another way for porn affiliates to generate some traffic to their sites to cash in on some sexually bored person who might sign up.

    I agree with shelover. I don’t see how this is web 2.0. I mean, sure it isn’t static regular pages. But it is nothing but a scam to get traffic onto porn sites. Just because you rank user submissions, doesn’t make it revolutionary.

    Now, for fear of being spam, I’m not going to put the name of my site on here. But its in development (with a dev blog and all!) and it runs on rails and while it is just a way to get porn to the masses…. that’s what fucking porn is! But, we’re trying to do it with a new spin. Who knows, maybe we’re diluted, maybe its a bad idea. But, I’ve been coding like a madman.

    See, porn should be about building community, talking, and of course: mastubating. Linkings with votes just doesn’t cut it.
