私は毎年、年始めにひいきのスタートアップとそのサービスのリストを公表している。今年で4年目だ―以前のリストは、こちらに。2006、2007、2008。読者の皆さんにおかれては、Crunchiesにお気に入りを投票していただきたい。このリストは純粋に私の個人的な好みだ。私はこのリストに載っているサービスをだいたいにおいて毎日利用している。仕事で使っている（Wordpress、Delicious、Zohoその他）ものもあれば、楽しみのために使っている（MySpace Music、Hulu）ものもある。両方に役立つサービス（Digg、Skype、YouTubeその他）もある。いずれにせよ、私はこれらのサービスを毎日、あるいはほとんど毎日使っている。これらのサービスが一つでも欠けたら仕事の生産性が落ちるし、楽しくない。リストには毎年少しずつ変更が加えられている。それにだんだん長くなっている。（右の表を参照）。この4年を通じてリストアップされたサービスは3つしかない。TechMeme、Skype、Wordpressだ。TechMemeはテクノロジー系ニュースのアグレゲータとして一日に何回も最新情報をチェックしている。VoIP通話とインスタント・メッセージでいちばん普通に使うのがSkypeだ。言うまでもなく、Wordpressはわれわれの運営する全てのブログで利用されている。今年は9つのサービス（１つのガジェットを含む。私は今までガジェットをこのリストから除外していた）を新たに追加した。それらは、 Animoto、Friendfeed、Hulu、iPhone 3G、MySpace Music、Pandora（これは過去に2007年にリスト入りしていたことがある）、Docstoc/Scribd、Yammerの各サービスだ。昨年のリストから落とされたのは、Amazon Music、Amie Street、Firefox、Flickr、Netvibes、Technorati。ただしリストから落としたサービスも、頻度が減っただけで、全く使わなくなったわけではない。気づいてみると、私はNetvibesとTechnoratiを以前ほど使わなくなった。（NetvibesよりGoogle Readerの方がはるかに優秀だ。Technoratiを使わなくなったのは遅すぎる上に内部リンクが多すぎる。Google Blog検索の方が使いやすい）。写真をFlickrよりFacebookにアップロードすることが多くなった。写真に写っている友達をタグづけできる機能があるし、私の他のニュースフィードといっしょに配信されるのが工合がいい。（携帯からのアップロードにはPosterousを使っている）。そういう訳で私にとってはFlickrの重要性は減少した。私の音楽鑑賞は大部分MySpace Musicに移った。楽曲を購入したい場合は、DRMなしのMP3をiTunesからダウンロードしている。新しい音楽を発見するにはAmie Streetも依然として優秀なサイトだ。曲の人気に応じて販売価格が上下するビジネスモデルは健全なものだと思う。Chromeを試用しているためFirefoxはリストから外れた。しかしまだ今のところどちらがよいか、結論は出ていない。しかしChromeのMac版が出たら乗り換える可能性はある。例年そうだが、これ以外にも私が毎日のように利用している優秀なサービスがある。しかしリストの長さをある程度以下に抑えるために割愛せざるを得なかった。また、毎日利用している個々のiPhoneアプリもリストに載せていない。そのうちのあるものは上記ウェブ・サービスに劣らず私の生産性と楽しみに貢献している。来年はかなりたくさんのアプリを追加したい。というわけで、以下に今年の「これなしには生きていけない」サービスのリストを公開する。アルファベット順だ。800-Free-411800-Free-411は2007年にリスト入りした。今後も当分の間リストから外れることはなさそうだ。このサービスでは無料で電話番号を調べられる。携帯キャリヤなら1回あたり最高$3.50も取られるところだ。800-Free-411はアメリカの電話番号案内サービス6%以上の市場シェアを獲得している。Google、Microsoft、AT&Tその他がこの市場に参入しているが、800-Free-411を提供しているJingle Networks社は無料電話番号案内に広告を挿入する方式に関して特許を取得している。いいことを教えよう。“FREE411USA”をSkypeの連絡先に登録しておけば、Skypeからも無料で番号が調べられる。CrunchBase InformationMyFree411Information provided by CrunchBaseAnimotoAnimotoは今回、初登場だ。このサービスはたった一つの機能しかない。だが、それをきわめて効果的に実現している。写真からBGMつきスライドショーを即座に生成してくれるのだ。このリストの他のサービスと違って、毎日使っているわけではないが、新しく登場したiPhoneアプリがあまりにすばらしいので、今年のリストに入れることにした。私はこのサービスが本当に気に入っている。CrunchBase InformationAnimotoInformation provided by CrunchBaseDeliciousソーシャル・ブックマークのDeliciousはいままでの4回のうち3回に登場している。（2007年にはライバルのBlue Dotに浮気したが、また戻った）。Delicious 2.0がようやく安定作動するようになり、Firefoxのアドオンが便利なのがリストに入れた理由だ。また、大分以前にあのイライラさせられるdel.icio.usというドメイン名を止めたのも好感が持てる。（サイト名を入力するたびにどこにドットが来るのか注意しなければならなかった）。CrunchBase InformationdeliciousInformation provided by CrunchBaseDiggDiggは過去3年間ずっとリストに入っている。ヒマがあるときにニュースを覗くには面白いサイトだ。それにわれわれTechCrunchのトラフィックのソースとしてDiggはトップ10入りしている。Hacker Newsもテクノロジー分野に特化したDigg的なニュース・サイトで、私は毎日見ている。CrunchBase InformationDiggInformation CrunchBaseFacebook5000人ほどの「友達」の動静を知るために、私はFacebookを毎日訪問している。私はFacebookプラットフォームで発表されたアプリのほとんどに興味がないが、写真とイベントのアプリだけは利用している。前回とは異なり、現在私はMySpaceも友達との交流に頻繁に利用している。友達全員とソーシャルな接触を維持するにはこの2つのネットワークの利用は不可欠だろう。CrunchBase CrunchBaseFriendfeedFriendfeedはマイクロブログとソーシャル活動情報の集約サービスだ。公式にローンチされたのは2008年の2月。私はこのサービスを毎日利用しているが、一部のブロガーのように中毒しているわけではない。しかしTwitter同様、Friendfeedもさまざまな分野の突発的なニュースを最初に知るには良い場所だ。これも「なくてはならない」サービスになっている。CrunchBase Mailだと思う）。私のメインのメール・サービスは依然Gmailだ。GearsによってGmailがオフラインでも利用できるようになるまでは、IMAP経由でアクセスを続けるつもり。CrunchBase InformationGmailInformation provided by CrunchBaseGoogle Reader3年前まで私はRSSなどのフィードを読むのにBloglinesを使っていた。その後短期間、NetNewsWireを利用したこともある。しかし、2005年の10月にローンチしたときは深刻なバグがあったものの、Google Readerは着実に進化を続け、現在はベストのフィードリーダーとなっている。CrunchBase InformationGoogle ReaderInformation provided by CrunchBaseHuluHuluは仕事には関係ない。仕事を終えてからテレビや映画を見るサービスだ。私はHuluが立ち上がりでもたついていた期間、約1年にわたって散々にけなしてきた。しかし、ご覧のとおり、今は私が毎日使うサービスのリストに入っている。最近では、普通のケーブルテレビを見るよりHuluを見る時間の方が長い。CrunchBase Musicは誕生以来ほんの数ヶ月しか経っておらず、まだバグも多い。しかしこのサービスは一般ユーザーの音楽に対する概念を一変させた。MySpaceは何百万にも上るバンドやアーティストのページと数多くのレーベルの楽曲の無料で合法的なストリーミングとを巧みに組み合わせ、新しく魅力的なな音楽サービスを創り上げることに成功した。ユーザーの使い勝手としてはたとえば、LaLaなどの方が優れているが、こういったストリーミング・サービスは依然、有料だ。音楽の未来は無料化にある。CrunchBase CrunchBasePandoraPandoraはユーザーの好みに応じて番組をカスタマイズしてくれるインターネット・ラジオだ。最初の2年間、リストに入っていた。今でも私はPandoraを常時聞いているし、特に、iPhoneアプリの登場でリストに再登場させることにした。PandoraはTechCrunchがスタートしたときに最初に紹介したスタートアップの一つだ。最近、登録ユーザー数が20M（2000万）を超えた。CrunchBase Officeタイプの文書（PDF、Word文書、Powerpointプレゼン、等）をアップロードし、それから他のサイトにエンベッドすることができる。訴訟の訴状その他興味あるPDF文書を発見した場合、われわれはどちらかのサービスにアップロードしてからTechCrunchの記事にエンベッドすることにしている。CrunchBase InformationDocstocScribdInformation CrunchBaseTechMemeTechMemeも4年連続リスト入り。これはブロゴスフィアの日刊新聞のような存在だ。さまざまなニュースがどのように進展しているかチェックするためにわれわれがもっともよく使っているサービスである。買収の申し出が多々寄せられているにもかかわらず、未だにファウンダーのGabeRiveraが独立を維持し続けているのは驚きだ。2008年12月にTechMemeはニュースの選択を完全に自動的に処理するのを断念して、一部に人手による編集を導入した。私はこれは改悪になると信じている。CrunchBase CrunchBaseYammerYammerはGeniというスタートアップからスピンオフした今年の新顔だ。昨年秋、TechCrunch50でデビューし、最優秀賞に輝いた。これは企業向けTwitterシステムだ。社内でTwitter方式でメッセージをやりとりできる。グループ・コミュニケーションのツールとしてはメール・グループよりはるかに効果的だ。TechCrunchでは、社内コミュニケーションを全面的にYammerに頼っている。CrunchBase CrunchBaseYouTubeYouTubeは過去3年連続リスト入り。私は相変わらずYouTubeでいろいろなビデオを見て時間を使ってしまう。もちろん仕事でも、独自のビデオをアップロードするのに利用している。いつぞやは連中から差し止め要求を喰らってしまったが、それでも依然としてお気に入りのサービスの一つだ。CrunchBase InformationYouTubeInformation provided by CrunchBaseZoho私個人に関する限り、ZohoはライバルのGoogle Docsと併せて、Microsoft Officeのワープロと表計算の利用機会を確実に侵食している。機能は依然として限られているが、Microsoft Officeは重すぎ、高価すぎる。こちらは無料で、しかも文書を開いている間、同僚と共同作業ができる。これこそオフィス生産性ツールのあるべき姿だ。CrunchBase InformationZohoInformation provided by
