Indeed’s Launches IM Interface
by Michael Arrington on December 19, 2005

Check this out: add “IndeedJobs” as a friend on Google Talk and say “hello”. You’ll get a nice (and fast) interface to the Indeed job search engine. Nice tool.

Ha. I jokingly entered “guitarist” expecting no results. But it seems the world still needs rockstars - look out here I come. Oh and I can plug the results into my desktop via RSS. Man that is cool.

do many people even use google talk?

Great idea but it seems silly that they would have created a GTalk bot before an AIM bot.

Unfortunately, AIM is a closed network, whereas Google Talk is open, based on the open standard XMPP (aka Jabber).

I’m amazed at how rare IM bots are. While I don’t really care for this bot, I can see lots of opportunities with either request/response bots or notification bots. ActiveBuddy was going down this path but appears to have gotton nowhere.

AIM/MSN Bots are pretty simple to build w/ conversagent’s buddyscript software. I would have definitely gone that route before google.

pwb: There’s so few AIM bots due to the stifling limitations of the AOL protocol - generally speaking, you can only send one message every five seconds - which makes for a very poor user experience. Until that number is able to be lowered, you’ll continue to see very few bots.

pwb: I discovered most people do not like talking to IM/IRC bots because IM/IRC are a communication medium shared by humans.

Bot technology is more progressive and adopted than we assume because companies don’t promote it - companies lay off hundreds of people for every new bot which isn’t good PR….
