[...] What isn’t clear is that Google will be very good at video search which, like their image search, is based entirely on metadata bolted on to the videos. Their track record in media search is a big snooze so far - they’ve experimented with using human labor to add tags to images, while startups like Riya (through it’s new Like.com product) are actually trying to analyze the images themselves when returning results. Google almost acquired Riya a year ago, but pulled out at the last minute. Today, Google is not the first place I go to search for images. It’s Flickr. [...]

[...] Riya Riya has created waves among the netizens in such a short time and there were tens of rumors about Riya being acquired even before it’s public release. What Riya does, it does best and there really is no competitor yet and I doubt there will be is it is not that simple to emulate. Surely companies should have taken notice of this fact and if acquired early, Riya might prove to be the biggest asset. This looks like Google’s playground, if you ask me.
[...] Riya sent me an invite to beta test their photo web site. In the email they did an interesting thing. They provided tags for bloggers so they can track down issues and fix the program. Great idea. I really want to try the software I just don’t have time to transfers a 1,000 photos over to my PC and then upload them to Riya. They say they are working on a Mac client, when it is available I am in. Or maybe I will just wait until Google or Yahoo buys them. As a Flickr user I am rooting to Yahoo at the moment. I think the Google sail has already shipped regarding Riya if word around the net is to be believed. [...]

I asked Robert this on his blog... When you guys talk so highly about Riya, is it the technology or how well Riya as an application performs? Here is what I found using Riya (includes a link to some test images that failed basic image recognition): http://balak.blogspot.com/2005/12/riya-alpha-release-so-alpha-it-hurts.html

Hi,

OK I feel there is a bit of an elephant in the living room with Riya, that nobody is talking about (so far as I can tell). There are HUGE big brother issues with this product. I know that, as Riya is set up, it will only tag people in your photos. But still - Google using Riya? Seems like there would be some big problems there. Foreign governments have already had a number of issues with Google maps, but I imagine Riya controversy would cause issues on a far greater magnitude. Am I missing something?
